    Job Description

    Summer Camp Instructors are responsible for engaging and educating summer campers about various sciences and STEM with the use of demonstrations and hands-on activities in an informal, fast-paced setting. The Instructor will deliver educational content in one or more of the following ways: formal classroom instruction, hands-on activities and demonstrations on and off museum grounds, and live shows. This position requires individuals to deliver science instruction in an informal setting to children ages K through sixth grade and lead high-school age youth volunteers. Qualified applicants will demonstrate enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Instructors will be expected to follow the curriculum provided and demonstrate proficiency in communicating science and STEM concepts to young audiences. Applicants should be good communicators, can complete tasks with minimal supervision, and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.

    Essential Functions

    • Responsible for delivering OSC Camp curriculum and engaging the campers in hands-on activities and demonstrations.
    • Responsible for supervising campers to and from daily activities, ensuring that all campers are safe and accounted for at ALL times.
    • Responsible for check-in and check-out procedures, including Early Care and/or Late Care.
    • Responsible for overseeing assigned counselors and volunteers each week.
    • Responsible for implementing safety rules and compliance to the OSC camp behavior policy.
    • Able to apply appropriate policies/procedures, enforce safety regulations, and respond quickly to critical incidents and emergencies.
    • Demonstrates commitment to OSC's vision, mission and values.
    • Must be able to work flexible hours including early mornings and evenings as necessary.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Education: Candidates should be degree seeking or hold a Bachelor’s Degree in education, science or related field, or hold equivalent work experience.
    • Experience & Certifications: Experience and enthusiasm for working with children and youth. Candidates will have to pass a background check and be able to sign an Affidavit of Good Moral Character as per the American Camp Association (ACA).

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working in youth programs and/or youth summer camp programs.
    • Experience in a museum or other informal/formal education environment, and background in public speaking or performance.
    • Experience working with advanced technology such as robotics, programming and coding and 3D printing.

    Physical Demands

    • Ability to remain in a stationary position.
    • Moves throughout the museum and 4Roots Farm Campus.
    • Ascends/descends stairs throughout the museum and 4Roots Farm Campus.
    • Ascends/descends ladders or other equipment to perform various tasks.
    • Observes and reacts to the needs of guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
    • Communicates and exchanges accurate information with guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners in a variety of formats including in-person, electronically, and over the phone.
    • Operates a computer and/or office equipment efficiently and accurately.
    • Manipulates and moves components weighing up to 25 pounds, including those that may be low to the ground or above eye level.
    • Frequently works in outdoor environments.
    • Frequently works in indoor environments.
    • Coping with demands and stresses associated with job and work environment.
    • Kneeling and Crouching (occasionally)
    • Weight Levels – Lift, Push, Pull
    • Up to 25 pounds

    Expected Hours of Work & Travel

    • This position is seasonal(May 28th– August7th) and primarily works Monday – Friday. Summer Camp staff will also be expected to attend mandatory camp training from May18th– 21st(evening training).
    • Travel throughout the Central Florida area may be required to deliver programs.

    Telecommuting This position is required to be onsite 100% of the time.
