CLASS DESCRIPTION

SUMMER CAMP JOBS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF F.U.N.!

Fulfilling work with Youth Grades K-8 in Seasonal Summer Camp
  • Summer Program runs June 12th - August 15th 
  • Training dates: June 11th - 13th 
  • Traditional Weekly Day Camp Programs for different age groups with swimming, field trips, arts and themed enrichment activities
  • All camps are based at locations in El Cerrito, close to BART and the Ohlone bike trail.
  • Hiring at all levels – youth work “rookies” to experienced Teachers!  
  • Pay range $20.39 - $24.79 DOE
  • Full day and half day shifts available Monday-Friday
  • If hired, staff may be assigned to work on July 4, 2025

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES)

Duties and Responsibilities:
Typical job duties are:

  • Active supervision of children in Summer Camp programs;
  • Assist with and conduct a variety of recreation activities;
  • Interact with recreation staff, youth participants, and caregivers;
  •  Assist with a variety of program and activity support such as getting supplies and equipment, setting up certain equipment, directing participants during events, and overseeing cleanup of the facility;
  • Foster a safe and stimulating environment for children;
  • Cordially assisting the public who have questions and inquiries;
  • Presenting and maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of a variety of youth development;
  • Knowledge of youth activities;
  • Knowledge and command of all of the latest safety standards and information related to supervision of children;
  • Ability to conduct and participate in recreation activities;
  • Ability to assist with related clerical duties;
  • Ability to demonstrate good customer service and staff relations;
  • Ability to maintain physical and mental capacities appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities;
  • Professional work habits including reliability, dependability, creativity, and demonstration of enthusiasm; and
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekdays, and weekends. 
Experience and Education

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Knowledge, interest, or experience working with children.  
** Appropriate clearance from background check/fingerprinting if 18 or older

THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION
The Recreation Department manages a full range of recreational and special activities for youth, adults and seniors. The department also schedules activities and rentals of buildings, picnic areas, sports fields and tennis courts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

When working in an external environment, position requires sitting, standing, walking on slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stopping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects, and children, averaging a weight of 25 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be required to wear uniforms and may be required to work varied shifts as needed, in addition to responding as a Disaster Services Emergency Worker.
