Grasslands Deputy Sheriff

The McKenzie County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for one opening in the Administrative Divisions for Grasslands Deputy. The Grasslands Deputy responds to reports of theft of livestock, secures "at large" farm animals, investigates allegations of cruelty to or abuse of livestock, patrols state and federal grasslands, recreational areas, and handles all livestock related calls. Reports to the Civil Sergeant and in their absence the Administrative Lieutenant. This position requires an 8-12 hour shift with rotations between days and nights, including overtime, holidays and weekends. Level and salary commensurate with experience.

• Patrols all national and state grasslands roads in the county to assure compliance with state traffic laws and for the protection of the public using the area, the main focus to be during the busier times on weekends and holidays
• Operate UTV as necessary to patrol areas not accessible by vehicle
• patrol Sather Lake, Summit, Bennet Creek, CCC Campground, Birnt Hills Loop, Tobacco Gardens Resort and those dispersed areas frequented by hunter and all-terrain vehicle users
• Work closely with the McKenzie County Grazing Association, attend meetings and make sure all the government pasture's (state and federal) are patrolled, and see that all incidents are investigated
• Work with ranchers that have cattle in said government pastures
• Responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local livestock laws and protecting the livestock industry within the county from losses through inspection, surveillance, investigation and enforcement
• Serve search warrants, collect evidence from the field, make arrests, issue citations, seize vehicles, seize livestock and independently conduct investigations
• Work with unpredictable range stock and must have extensive experience working in this environment in order to take the necessary precautions

• Work with the North Dakota State Veterinarian
• Interact with North Dakota Game and Fish regularly
• Educate the public about livestock laws and regulations
• Testify in court
• Assist the North Dakota Stockmen's Association when requested
• Represent McKenzie County Sheriff's Office at agricultural associations and meetings
• Participate in the creating and implementation of crime prevention policies and programs
• May be required to operate a vessel on lakes, rivers or waterways
• Coordinate law enforcement/Search and Rescue needs for events on the Maah Daah Hey Trail
• All duties of a Deputy Sheriff as needed

• Preparing reports and record keeping
• Working knowledge of human behavior and various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
• Use of firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
• Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle

• One year of law enforcement experience is required
• Must meet the requirements of the Deputy Sheriff position

• Knowledge of water and boating safety
• Understanding of state and federal livestock laws and regulations
• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
• Experience handling livestock
• General knowledge of lending institution and departmental requirements regarding liens and mortgages, ownership legal requirements, stock handling methods and techniques, the statewide brand recording system and arithmetic
