The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising and guiding a cohort of students throughout the day, ensuring their safety, well-being, and engagement. As a key support to the camp’s structure, counselors will accompany their assigned group to all activities, including class transitions, recess, and lunch. This role requires patience, a love for working with children, and a positive attitude. Camp Counselors must be flexible and willing to work in various environments, including outside in the summer heat. The role provides an excellent opportunity for college students or high school juniors and seniors, assistant teachers, and adults looking to gain experience working with children.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Student Cohort: Accompany a cohort through all daily activities, ensuring safe transitions between classes, recess, and lunch.
  • Ensure Safety During Recess: Monitor and actively engage with children during recess and outdoor activities, ensuring their safety and well-being, especially in the summer heat.
  • Monitor Lunch Behavior: Eat lunch with your cohort, ensuring students are safe, well-behaved, and have their needs met.
  • Build Relationships with Students: Foster positive relationships with students, helping them feel supported, engaged, and safe throughout the day.
  • Carpool Support: Participate in either a.m. or p.m. carpool duty, ensuring students are safely escorted during arrival and dismissal.
  • Manage Minor Conflicts: Address minor behavioral issues within the cohort and use problem-solving skills to resolve conflicts. Escalate larger concerns to camp specialists or leadership when necessary.
  • Engage with Parents: Maintain a professional and positive attitude when interacting with parents during drop-off and pick-up, relaying any necessary information or addressing concerns.
  • Attend Training: Participate in a pre-camp orientation to learn about the daily schedule, safety procedures, and role expectations.

Qualifications

  • Experience Working with Children: Previous experience in a camp, school, or childcare setting is preferred, but a strong interest in working with children is essential.
  • Positive and Patient Attitude: Ability to stay calm, patient, and supportive, even in busy or challenging situations.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to connect with campers, staff, and parents.
  • Dependable and Responsible: Punctual, reliable, and committed to maintaining a safe, respectful environment for all campers.
  • Physically Active: Comfortable working outdoors and ensuring student safety during transitions and outdoor activities.
  • Flexible and Team-Oriented: Willingness to adapt to a dynamic camp schedule and collaborate closely with other counselors, specialists, and camp leadership.
  • Safe Environment training and background checks are conditions of employment.
