Position Focus:

Under the direction of the Day Camp Director and Recreation Supervisor a counselor’s primary duty is to assist in the supervision and implementation of Itasca Park District Summer Day Camp programs.

Qualifications:

Must have current First Aid, CPR and AED certification or willing to acquire certification before the first day of work. Applicant must be 16 years or older. Must possess the ability to plan, organize, supervise and lead day camp activities, programs and field trips.

Hours:

Hours will vary depending on camp assigned to and camper ratios.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for the planning, organization, implementation and supervision of day camp activities.

2. Assist the Day Camp Director in the organization and supervision of all day camp programs and field trips as requested by the Director and/or Recreation Supervisor.

3. Responsible for any equipment and material used in an activity.

4. Work in cooperation with coworkers and administrative staff.

5. Responsible for following and enforcing all guidelines set forth in the Itasca Park District Day Camp Manual.

6. Attend any training sessions required by the Recreation Supervisor or Itasca Park District.

7. Supervision of all day camp participants and activities.

8. Clean any activity areas necessary at the conclusion of the program.

9. Maintain a safe environment for participants and other staff.

10. Assist in the coordination of daily schedules and lesson plans.

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Attend all meetings, planning and training sessions as requested by the Recreation Supervisor.

2. Develop and maintain relationship with participants, parents and other staff.

3. Follow any discipline procedures as outlined in the Day Camp Policy Manual.

4. Complete Accident/Incident Reports and correspondence as needed.

5. Prepare and submit any forms necessary including Accident/Incident Reports, time sheets, evaluations, weekly schedules and lesson plans in a timely manner.

6. Communicate problems, concerns and changes in schedule to Day Camp Director.

7. Communicate any behavioral or disciplinary problems to the attention of the Day Camp Director and/or Recreation Supervisor.

8. Assist in the inventory and return of all supplies and equipment to the Itasca Recreation Center.

9. Perform any other duties and responsibilities not covered above, but directed by the Day Camp Director or Recreation Supervisor.

Requirements

Required Knowledge:

Day Camp Counselors must be able to work closely under the supervision of the Day Camp Director. He or She must be able to work with the general population, including children, parents and staff and be able to recognize and take appropriate action to correct safety hazards.

Required Competencies:

Must have the ability to read, write and organize materials. Must be able to supervise participants and have safety awareness.

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:

Staff may be required to work long periods outside. The person will be required to be able to lift and turn and carry 25 pounds at least 10 feet, and placing this load on shelves at chest height so as to fulfill this requirement. May be required to work during various weather conditions, including hot temperatures and rain.
