    Job Details Job Location: Signal Hill, CA 90755 Position Type: Full Time Salary Range: $20.67 - $24.80 Hourly Job Category: Entry Level Organization Summary The Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has helped at-risk young adults develop themselves since 1987. To date, more than 10,000 young people have participated in CCLB classes and service projects, learning new skills while contributing to the quality of life for residents of the greater Long Beach area.

    Mission

    The primary mission of the Conservation Corps of Long Beach is to support young people in realizing their potential through work, service, conservation, and education. Position Summary Under the supervision of a CCLB Coordinator or Manager, the Crew Supervisor I is responsible for the day-to-day guidance and training of a crew of 2-14 young adults, aged 18-26 years, in various work and educational activities and projects. This position will assist the managing supervisor (Coordinator or Manager) with oversight of corpsmember crews and ensuring that projects/activities are carried out efficiently and in alignment with project goals. This role emphasizes hands-on training, safety, and the development of crew members’ technical and professional skills.

    Essential Responsibilities

    The Crew Supervisor I may be responsible for a variety of different programmatic responsibilities within the departmental structure of the Conservation Corps of Long Beach. Responsibilities may include the following:

    Sustainability: Collection and processing of recycling materials (e.g. beverage containers, cardboard, and electronic waste) from various accounts, events and organizations. Additionally, adhering to CalRecycle guidelines and reporting procedures. Landscape Construction: irrigation system installation, training and troubleshooting. Tree and plant installation; this includes demonstration and instruction of staking techniques, mulching practices and watering schedules. Grading and soil management and general construction knowledge.

    Restoration: invasive vegetation removal, tree planting, tree falling and bucking, fuels reduction, wildfire restoration, fencing, litter abatement, historical preservation, trail and park development and maintenance.

    Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

    • Train crew members on the safe operation of equipment.

    Emphasize the importance of daily equipment inspections and regular maintenance to prevent accidents and ensure project efficiency.

    • Provide hands-on instruction in tool and machinery care, such as cleaning, lubrication, and storage, to extend the life of equipment.
    • Assist with tool tracking and inventory

    Project Implementation:

    Supervision of crews as they complete projects specific to the department assigned

    • Monitor and support quality control of work

    Teaching and Mentoring:

    • Provide hands-on, in-depth teaching to crew members, ensuring they develop a strong understanding of project techniques specific to assigned department and general construction knowledge.

    Encourage a strong work ethic by emphasizing the value of teamwork, punctuality, responsibility, and pride in their work. Regularly assess Corpmembers' progress and skill development, offering constructive feedback and additional training as necessary. Foster a culture of learning, motivating young adults to improve their skills and pursue potential careers in landscape construction or related fields.

    • Assist with corpsmember training and various presentations when necessary. This can include First Aid/CPR, safety, driver training, power tool safety and other areas related to project work and program goals.

    Safety and PPE Education:

    • Conduct regular safety meetings, emphasizing the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its role in preventing job site injuries.
    • Train crew members in the proper use of PPE, such as gloves, helmets, safety glasses, and composite-toed boots, and always ensure compliance.
    • Educate the Corpmembers on potential hazards in landscape and construction projects, such as operating power tools, working with concrete, and handling heavy materials, and provide strategies for minimizing risk.

    Driving/ Vehicle Inspection:

    The Landscape Construction Crew Supervisor I position requires a Valid California Driver’s License and a clean driver’s record. Ability to competently prevent and report vehicle issues through proper inspection and reporting.

    Reporting Procedures:

    • Prepare oral and written reports of project accomplishments, maintain schedules, corpsmember evaluations, incident reports and documentation of corpsmember attendance, participation and work hours.
    • Assist with data collection, daily project metrics, photo uploads and monthly project reports.

    Counsel, motivate, and discipline individual corpsmembers as appropriate.

    • Participate in staff and corpsmember meetings.
    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of project progress, material usage, crew performance, and any incidents that occur on-site.
    • Report issues, delays, and safety concerns to the Coordinator or Manager, and work collaboratively to implement solutions.
    • Ensure all work is completed according to project specifications and environmental guidelines, and document any deviations.
    • Conduct regular crew and individual meetings to discuss corpsmember progress

    Required Education and Experience:

    High School Diploma or equivalent required Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with restoration qualifications, landscape construction qualifications or sustainability qualifications. This may include: irrigation systems, tree planting, soil management, invasive vegetation removal, wildfire restoration, historical preservation or recycling tracking.

    Experience in general construction practices, such as concrete pouring, form-building, and working with construction materials.(Landscape Construction Only):

    Prior experience operating and maintaining power tools and equipment. At least 1 year of experience in a supervisory or leadership role, ideally with a focus on training or mentoring young adults or entry-level workers. Basic knowledge of safety protocols and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use on construction or landscape job sites.

    Knowledge of principles of safety, use of hand and power tools Knowledge of methods of group instruction and motivation Ability to properly discipline corpsmembers, keep records, prepare reports and communicate effectively with young adults under the supervision of a supervisor Valid Class C Driver’s License; driver’s history must be able to be insured on CCLB policies

    Experience working with young adults from a diverse social and ethnic background.:

    Ability to effectively communicate written and verbal instructions and directions. Proficiency in conservation, natural resource, and land management. Knowledge and appreciation of environmental conservation awareness. An affinity and ability to share and instruct environmental ethics with CCLB participants and staff.

    Possess good interpersonal skills to communicate and work effectively with public officials, community and public entities, and other constituents and stakeholders. Ability to stand for extended periods of time Willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Valid California Driver’s License

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    Some college or special training in vocational or trade skills Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word and the Microsoft Suite. Proven experience in concrete work and basic construction tasks, such as form-building, pouring, and finishing concrete.

    • Leadership experience, particularly in training or supervising young adults or inexperienced workers in a landscape or construction environment.

    Experience in safety management, particularly related to enforcing the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adhering to job site safety standards.:

    Experience working with diverse groups of young adults in educational or training programs is a plus.:

    Experience in environmental education:

    Experience developing and facilitating educational training:

    Corps experience of one year or more at CCLB or similar organization. Knowledge of or background in natural resources and ecology Class C Driver’s License with Endorsement or Class B Driver’s License

    Other Duties and Requirements:

    Must be able to perform physical exercises, heavy lifting and manual labor. DMV print-out, Class C Driver’s License

    Salary and Benefits:
