    This position will serve as a Counselor - Lifeguard for the DPF 4-H Camp, a residential summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County, located in Riverhead, New York. The primary

    Required Qualifications:

    Must be 18 years of age (according to New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). Must have current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications (will train or assist with re-certifications if necessary). Must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (will train or assist with re-certification if necessary).

    Must have current waterfront lifeguarding and other certifications as appropriate (will train or assist with re-certification if necessary). Desire, ability and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at DPF 4-H Camp, Riverhead, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4-H Camp is in session.

    Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

    Responsibilities:

    Responsibilities:

    • 85% Represent the DPF 4-H Camp in initial contact with parents and campers on opening day of each session, making every effort to make campers and parents feel comfortable and welcome.
    • Assist other cabin counselors in supervision of 6-16 campers in cabin.

    See to their safety and well- being at all times.

    • Assist campers in scheduling classes, and following the daily camp schedule.
    • Review weekly camp medical bulletins, and stay aware of special medical

    requirements:

    • Provide to all campers the

    • Provide support for individual campers who have difficulties adjusting to other campers and camp life, keeping Program Coordinators and Directors aware of any concerns.

    Work in concert with other Camp Staff to provide supervision of campers during all meals, recreation time, free time, free swim, evening programs and other camp activities.

    • Maintain visibility and positive relationships with all campers.

    Cooperate with Coordinators, Directors and Counselors in the development and implementation of all DPF 4-H Camp activities, including afternoon, evening and weekend camp activities, utilizing research-based 4-H curriculum. Carry out instruction and lifeguard duties during swim periods and serve as instructor in canoeing, boating, and kayaking.

    • Follow the recommendations of BSI or WSI for testing and classifying swimming abilities of campers and staff.

    Teach Red Cross certified waterfront classes and activities as outlined by the Waterfront Coordinator and Program Director. Award recognition and participation certificates to campers when earned.

    • Work with the Camp Team Leader, Camp Director, Program Director and Camp Counselors to provide to all campers the

    • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of all program offerings under the leadership and direction of the 4-H Camp Director.

    Administrative

    Responsibilities:

    • 10% Enforce all camp health and safety standards, keeping campers safe at all times.
    • Assist Camp Director, Coordinators and Counselors in the coordination and planning of camper activities and classes, including afternoon, special programs, evening and weekend activities.

    Notify the Waterfront Coordinator for reportable injuries and illness occurring in the waterfront area. During DPF 4-H Camp staff training, work with Waterfront Coordinator to set up and organize the waterfront area. During DPF season clean up time, work with the Waterfront Coordinator to breakdown and inventory waterfront area and equipment.

    • Monitor progress of classes, and maintain records on all instructional classes, including lesson plans.
    • Oversee the maintenance and inspection of program equipment, supplies, and program sites, (including daily and end of season inventory) to ensure they are in good condition and are in safe working order, file for repairs if needed; maintain materials and equipment needed for classes.
    • Maintain the waterfront “Buddy Board” during swim times.
    • Assist in the daily upkeep of camp facilities.
    • Assist in the evaluation of the current camping season, and make suggestions for the next camping season.
    • Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Camp Director.

    Professional Improvement - 5% Attend DPF 4-H Camp orientation/training program, and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled. In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

    • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

    • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

    Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard. Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified. POSITION DETAILS: This is an exempt, full-time position, 100% FTE.
