    Temporary High School Summer Camp Director:

    The Temporary High School Summer Camp Director for the program works closely with the health director, chaperones, and Cornell staff to ensure the safety and well‑being of all campers. This role requires staying overnight with participants in a Cornell residence hall for the duration of the program (July 13–25) and accompanying the group on a field trip to Niagara Falls. The Camp Director is also expected to participate in pre‑program planning to become familiar with schedules, policies, and logistical details.

    The dates of this position will be from June 1, 2026 – July 31, 2026. This position is not benefits‑eligible and does not qualify for visa sponsorship or relocation assistance. Salary for the full duration of the camp is $4500.

    Required Qualifications:

    At least 25 years old Holds a bachelor’s degree Minimum 24 weeks of administrative or supervisory experience in camping or an equivalent field. [health.ny.gov]

    Must pass:

    New York State Central Register Database (SCR) clearance for child abuse/maltreatment. Criminal background screening conducted by NYSDOH. [health.ny.gov] Must not appear on the NYS Sex Offender Registry. [health.ny.gov] Must take the First Aid and CPR/AED training with State-approved vendors. Must complete a free and online training about reporting prior to the start of the program. (Directors of overnight camps are mandated reporters in New York State.)

    Core Competencies Strong leadership, decision-making, and crisis‑management skills. Knowledge of child development and best practices in youth supervision, including knowledge about policies concerning discipline, abuse, and responding to emergencies. Ability to interpret and apply NYS health and safety regulations.

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work long or irregular hours, including evenings and weekends during camp operation.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Camp Administration & Compliance
    • Ensure the camp operates in full compliance with NYS Sanitary Code Subpart 7‑2.

    Co-prepare and implement the camp’s written Safety Plan, including emergency preparedness, health protocols, and supervision standards. [health.ny.gov]

    • Maintain all required permits and documentation for camp operation.
    • Coordinate with the local health department for inspections, approvals, and incident reporting.
    • Adhere to all Cornell University policies and procedures including, but not limited to, University Policy 8.8 and related procedures. The camp director is also responsible for ensuring all program staff adhere to these policies and procedures.
    • Enforce the program's code of conduct and disciplinary measures with participants and makes disciplinary reports to the program director to determine disciplinary actions.
    • Report all incidents in writing to the program director, who in turn report it to both Cornell University and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
    • Staff Management

    Supervise all camp staff and activity leaders.

    • Oversee performance, scheduling, staff ratios, and adherence to supervision standards for all program areas.
    • Camper Safety & Supervision
    • Ensure the required camper-to-staff ratio (1 chaperone to 10 campers) is maintained at all times. [health.ny.gov]
    • Establish protocols for supervision, discipline, and behavior management.
    • Oversee safe transportation practices for any camp vehicles, trips, or charters when applicable. [newyork.public.law]
    • Health, Wellness, and Emergency Care

    Supervise the Camp Health Director and ensure all health staff meet NYS credentialing requirements. [health.ny.gov]

    Oversee:

    Initial health screenings and daily health surveillance. Emergency procedures, including first aid, CPR availability, and illness management. Medical log maintenance and required incident reporting to NYSDOH within 24 hours.

    • Ensure compliance with policies on medications, allergies, disease prevention, and youth health accommodations.
    • Program Leadership
    • Oversee planning and delivery of camp activities, ensuring they are age‑appropriate, safe, and compliant with NYSDOH safety standards.

    Approve all high‑risk activities, such as aquatic programs and off‑site trips.

    • Monitor activity areas for safety hazards and implement corrective actions promptly.
    • Parent & Community Communication
    • Communicate camp policies, schedules, safety procedures, and incident notifications to parents/guardians when necessary.

    Serve as the primary liaison with families, community partners, and regulatory authorities.

    • Communicate directly with parents/guardians in case of an emergency or disciplinary measure in cases when the program director is unavailable.
