    The US Fish and Wildlife Service seeks to engage young professionals in natural resource careers. You must be:

    a U.S. citizen or legal resident. a college graduate

    Position Description:

    The Conservation Communications Intern will support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Ecological Services program by developing engaging communication materials that highlight conservation projects, staff, and impact across the Midwest region. The intern will work closely with both Ecological Services staff and the Office of Communications to translate technical conservation work into accessible content for a variety of audiences.

    Responsibilities:

    The intern will:

    • Develop 1–2 written stories per month highlighting conservation projects, outreach efforts, and staff.
    • Create and publish monthly social media content.
    • Contribute to internal and external communications, including newsletters, partner communications, and media outreach.
    • Assist in drafting a two-year communications plan for the Midwest Ecological Services program.
    • Conduct interviews and gather information from staff and field sites to support storytelling efforts.
    • Collaborate with biologists and communications professionals across multiple field offices.

    Qualifications:

    Successful candidates will demonstrate:

    Educational background in communications, journalism, public affairs, environmental science, ecology, or a related field Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate scientific information to broad audiences

    Experience or interest in communications, outreach, media relations, or public engagement:

    Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a professional setting Learning Objectives

    Through this internship, participants will:

    • Develop professional writing and science communication skills.

    Gain experience creating content for government communications platforms

    • Build skills in social media strategy and audience engagement.

    Strengthen project management and organizational skills. Gain exposure to conservation fieldwork and interdisciplinary collaboration. Explore additional technical skills such as GIS and field survey methods, depending on interest. Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority (PLC) The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35, and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority. Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position for up to 2 years. The applicant must apply to a PLC-eligible position advertised on USAJobs.gov and selected off a non-competitive certificate of eligibility.
