    Job Description

    Lyon County Area Transportation is seeking a part-time bus driver. This is a part-time, non-exempt position with benefits including health/dental/vision insurance and paid time off. Bus drivers are responsible for operating public transport vehicles safely and reliably, collecting fares and selling bus passes to passengers, and fueling and cleaning/disinfecting vehicles as required.

    This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent as well as a satisfactory driving record. Candidates must pass pre-hire testing including a DOT physical, drug test, and background check. Prior experience driving buses is preferred but not required.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    JOB SUMMARY: This is a part-time FLSA non-exempt position*, responsible for the operation of public transit vehicles. Work hours are flexible with occasional overtime; Saturday work may be required. This position reports directly to the Transportation Manager and to the Dispatch Supervisor when the Transportation Manger is unavailable.

    The roles, responsibilities, job functions, knowledge, skills and abilities set forth herein may be revised from time-to-time in order to comply with federal and state laws, departmental needs and the changing requirements for this position.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Operate vehicles for the public transit deviated fixed route system. Operate vehicles for the demand response service (i.e. boarding to destination). Collect fares and sell bus passes to riders. Fuel bus at the end of shift every night. Cleaning and disinfecting vehicle during downtime and at the end of every shift.

    • Documents required procedures and vehicles operating reports (i.e. incident reports).

    Fill out completed deficiency reports and turn into Maintenance Coordinator. Attend / Complete required transportation training and educational seminars as needed. Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, the general public, fellow coworkers and management. Being pleasant with others on the job and displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude. Maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.

    Must be reliable, responsible, dependable, and fulfill obligations. Must show up to work as scheduled.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Requires a driving record approved by the agency insuring the public transit vehicles. Must be able to pass a pre-employment DOT transportation physical examination. Education: High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent required. Experience: Prior experience driving buses is a plus but will train. Knowledge: Must have the ability to receive, read, interpret and follow verbal and written instructions. Required to write and speak English fluently with the ability to speak a foreign language helpful.

    Skills:

    Computer: Able to operate a tablet. Interpersonal: Ability to work with, relate to and feel comfortable with the general public including the elderly and disabled. Problem Solving: Must have strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Communication: Ability to communicate fluently, both verbally and in writing.

    Physical Requirements: Requires sufficient visual acuity to be able to read, write and operate public vehicles. Requires a sufficient hearing level to operate vehicles and communicate by two-way radio. Occasional requirement to lift items weighting up to 40 pounds to a height of 36 inches. Ability to assist wheelchair bound passengers with loading, unloading and securing wheelchairs during transport.
