    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Lifeguard is responsible for the safety, well being of all the campers in the pool environment and ensuring that a high quality aquatic program is implemented. The lifeguard provides a high level of supervision at all times and assists with activities as directed. The Lifeguard works as part of a team to eliminate unsafe practices and physical hazards, and administers proper first aid and carries out emergency procedures in the event of accident.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Enforce the pool rules to ensure a safe environment for all campers and staff at all times.
    • Assist with activities such as swim lessons as required, participating actively in the development of children’s skills, self-esteem, and values.
    • Build positive relationships with children through respectful and courteous interactions each day. Learn campers’ names on the first day of each week. Consistently greet campers with a smile and treat them with enthusiasm. Respond to campers’ needs.
    • Cooperate with other YMCA staff to meet the mission and goals of the South Mountain YMCA Camps Program.
    • Report immediately all concerns and matters of interest to the Aquatics Coordinator or nearest supervisor.
    • Adhere to the Metro YMCA of the Oranges Aquatics Policy Guidelines.

    Safety & Supervision:

    • Position yourself to view the entire pool area easily. Scan the pool continuously when members are in the water, maintaining constant head counts.
    • Respond immediately to any and all emergencies. Work as part of a team with counselors and other lifeguards to provide first aid assistance as required.
    • Lifeguards are not permitted to take part in any activity which would distract them from watching the pool. This includes using your cell phone on duty, reading, doing homework, or talking for extended periods either with campers, guards, or staff.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the entire pool area, including pool deck, gutters, fence, and any other area(s) designated by the supervisor.
    • In the event that an accident occurs, the lifeguard is responsible for filling out the accident report. Reports must be legible, detailed, and filled out completely every time the first aid kit is used. Any incident requiring medical attention should be brought to the attention of the Health Director.
    • Participate in safety drills to meet ACA requirements.
    • Attend all YMCA training and meetings as requested by the supervisor or the Metro YMCA of the Oranges promptly and in their entirety. Maintain certifications necessary for the position throughout the program.

    Personal Conduct:

    • Wear the appropriate YMCA uniform, including a suit, whistle, shirt, and a rescue tube at all times. Caps, sweatpants or shoes are not proper attire.
    • Maintain a professional demeanor befitting a representative of the YMCA.
    • Maintain a positive attitude, responsibility and self -motivation. Be punctual and reliable.
    • Perform the above responsibilities in an enthusiastic and committed manner. Treat camps and fellow staff members with respect.
    • Assist in other duties or special events as requested.

    Requirements:

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to relate to children.

    2. Experience/Education:

    • Must hold and maintain current American Red Cross Life Guarding Certification including First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

    4. Physical Effort and Dexterity:

    • Must be capable of being on your feet for long periods of time and be able to actively supervise children in an outdoor environment. Must be capable of bending, kneeling, squatting and lifting 30 pound weight.

    6. Visual Acuity, Hearing, Speaking:

    • Must be able to visually account for all children in the program, whether inside or outside. Must be able to hear whistle or alarms. Clear speaking voice needed to command control of group.

    8. ACA Accreditation Requirements:

    • Must complete Background Check form upon hire and any other training requirements specified by the Camp Director.
    • Reasonable Accommodation: Candidates whose disabilities make them unable to meet these requirements will still be considered fully qualified if they can perform the essential functions of the job with reasonable accommodation.
