Description:
of Work This is a Time-Limited position that ends 12/312029 unless renewed. This position functions within region 3 of the NC Forest Service and reports directly to the Assistant Regional Forester, Fire Control. As a member of regional staff, the position will be expected to assist with emergency response activities during periods of high fire danger or other natural disasters.
This position is responsible for providing wildfire mitigation coordination and support within the Tropical System Helene disaster declared counties and is funded through supplemental grant funding. This position provides leadership, coordination, training and support related to the recovery from TS Helene as well as implementation of NCFS’s Mitigation and Wildland Urban Interface programs.
- Oversee and manage the Helene wildfire mitigation program.
This includes providing oversight and training to field staff on the development of various wildfire mitigation projects through on the ground field visits and classroom settings.
- Develop proposals for preparedness and hazard mitigation projects.
- Review project proposals submitted by NCFS, partners or cooperating agencies.
Prioritize and approve proposed mitigation projects. This position is also expected to assist with wildfire response across the state as needed and may become qualified in a position to serve on one of the NCFS Complex Incident Management Teams. This includes response in NC as well as other southern states when compact assistance is needed.
Work hours are typically 8-5, Monday-Friday. Some work will require evening, holiday, and weekend work. The NC Forest Service is the State of NC lead on wildland emergency response and fire suppression and is a member of the State Emergency Response Team. There is overnight travel required and at times may be extended days of 16+/- depending on situation.

and Abilities/Management Preferences Recruitment Range-$43,738-$76,542 Thorough knowledge of Firewise, CPP, CWPP and other programs used to mitigate wildland fire in the urban interface. Expert knowledge of fire behavior, fire weather, fire suppression tactics, forest fuels, smoke management, and Fireline safety.
