of Work The North Carolina Aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Marine Mammal Stranding Technician. The marine mammal stranding technician position is the Aquarium Division staff member responsible for directly assisting the stranding coordinator in all aspects of marine mammal stranding response in our designated coverage area under the federal stranding agreement with NOAA.
The position’s purpose is to assist with all marine mammal stranding response operations cooperatively with all partners. The position works with Aquariums staff, responders, veterinarians from partner organizations, trained volunteers, and municipalities, town, county, state, and federal officials to successfully respond to marine mammal strandings following all regulations related to the federal stranding agreement, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

Key Responsibilities:
include but are not limited to: Assisting with the following under the direction of the stranding coordinator: scientific research on marine mammals; data collection, management, and analysis; stranding response initial exams and triage; necropsies; transport of specimens; and collection, storage, and sharing of samples and data.
The position assists with onsite outreach to the public and contributing to media communications. The position assists partners in scientific research projects and program development. This position may be asked to communicate directly with appropriate federal, state and local authorities. The position assists in preparing and submitting progress reports and maintaining permits.
Position/Physical
Requirements:
Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Experience:
with driving 4WD vehicles on sandy beaches, working in and around water and operating vehicles in coastal environments, and the ability to receive an ATV Operator License for National Parks and National Seashores. Must be able to lift, push, drag, or pull a minimum of 50 lbs. Ability to work in various weather conditions, including extreme outdoor temperatures or situations or severe weather events.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 4,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.
