    Job Description

Location: Thurmont, MD (Camp & Therapeutic Recreation Programs)

Organization: The League for People with Disabilities

    Department: Camping & Therapeutic Recreation

Employment Type: Part-Time | Weekend Respite Programs (Year-Round)

    Salary: $500 per respite weekend

    ----------------------------------------:

    ABOUT THE LEAGUE:

At The League for People with Disabilities, we’re building a world where everyone — regardless of ability — can live, learn, work, and play in a supportive and inclusive community.

Through our Camp Greentop Respite Programs, we provide unforgettable weekend getaways for youth and adults with physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities. Every weekend is packed with fun, friendship, and empowerment — and we need YOU to help make the magic happen.

    ----------------------------------------:

    POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Camp Respite Counselor, you’ll be a guide, friend, and role model for campers during weekend retreats. From leading games and songs to assisting with personal care, you’ll help create a safe, supportive, and joy-filled experience that campers will never forget.

This is not just a job — it’s a chance to change lives (including your own).

    ----------------------------------------:

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Supervise and engage campers in recreational, social, and creative activities throughout the weekend.
    • Provide hands-on support with daily living tasks such as dressing, feeding, hygiene, and mobility — with respect and compassion.
    • Foster an inclusive, positive, and fun camp culture for all participants.
    • Assist in behavior support, conflict resolution, and promoting positive social interaction.
    • Collaborate with fellow counselors, nurses, and program staff to ensure camper safety and well-being.
    • Support setup, cleanup, and transitions between activities and meals.
    • Be an energetic leader, a caring companion, and a dependable team member.

    ----------------------------------------:

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:

    • Must be at least 18 years old
    • Ability to work weekend shifts (typically Friday evening to Sunday afternoon)
    • Passion for working with individuals with disabilities
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor!
    • Ability to assist with physical tasks, including lifting, transfers, and mobility support

    Preferred:

    • Experience working with youth or individuals with disabilities (camp, school, recreation, etc.)
    • CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
    • Background in special education, social work, psychology, or recreational therapy

    ----------------------------------------:

    WHAT WE OFFER:

    • A fun, active, and meaningful part-time opportunity
    • All meals provided during weekend shifts
    • Supportive, team-oriented environment with training included
    • The chance to build lifelong connections — with campers and fellow staff
    • Resume-building experience in disability services, education, healthcare, and more
    • A job that feeds the soul (and includes s’mores!)

    ----------------------------------------:

MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS WEEKEND — AND EVERY WEEKEND!

If you're ready to bring energy, empathy, and enthusiasm to our weekend camp respites, we want to hear from you.
