    Job Description

    Description:

The Mariners’ Museum sits in an urban oasis – the 550-acre park is now home to the 167-acre Mariners’ Lake and the Noland Trail – a five-mile shoreline trail with 14 bridges. Within the Museum itself, you will find 90,000 square feet of exhibition galleries.

Our Park Rangers are responsible for the safety and well-being of our Park users and our guests within the Museum. It’s important for our Park Rangers to have a love and passion for the outdoors but also understand that this role serves the inside of our Museum as well. The Park Ranger is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for visitors, volunteers, and staff while providing excellent customer service.

Some experience is preferred but not expected or required. A willingness to learn and work in a team atmosphere is critical. This is a permanent, full-time, hourly, non-exempt position (40 hours a week) with a starting hourly rate of $17.00 an hour. The Museum is open seven days a week, so the Park Ranger is expected to work rotating 8-hour shifts, including weekends and some holidays. In addition to getting to work at a really fun Museum and Park, we offer really great benefits, including:

Three weeks of accrued vacation from your first day. Two weeks of accrued sick leave. Personal Days. 12 paid holidays. Retirement Plan with company match. Health and Dental Insurance with generous employer contribution. Coffee, donuts, and professional development every Thursday. Opportunities to experience new things like kayaking on Mariners’ Lake!

While this is not an exhaustive task list, below is generally what a Park Ranger could expect while working at The Mariners’ Museum and Park.

    Duties:

    Park Responsibilities:

While outside in the Park, the Park Rangers are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our Park users and Museum Team. The Park Rangers patrol the Park, including the 5-mile Noland Trail, both on foot and in vehicles to maintain a positive presence throughout the Park while also enforcing parking regulations and other Park rules. The Park Rangers also monitor and patrol Mariners’ Lake and provide safety support to Lake programming.

    Museum Responsibilities:

While inside the Museum, the Park Rangers are responsible for operating our Control Room and monitoring the cameras and alarms while also being the first point of contact for business-related visitors. The Park Rangers greet our team and distribute team member badges. Our Control Room is the first point of contact for all emergencies. The Park Rangers are also responsible for monitoring the locked and secured areas of the Museum while also enforcing rules and expectations within the Museum.

    Requirements:

    Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have the ability to obtain various Museum-sponsored safety and emergency response certifications.

    Conditions of Employment:

Must be able to pass a background check prior to employment. Must be able to respond to the Museum within 30 minutes when assigned as Duty Ranger. During off-duty hours, often on short notice, respond to emergency calls needing immediate attention. A valid Motor Vehicles driver’s license with a good DMV record is required.

    Physical Requirements:

Must be able to work in various environmental conditions as this position works both inside and outside. Must be able to walk and be on your feet for a lengthy period, up to 8 hours a day. Must be able to climb stairs, stoop and kneel when necessary. Must be able to lift objects, up to 50 pounds, on occasion.

Must have the ability to swim at least 50 meters fully clothed. Must have visual acuity and proficient hearing to react and respond quickly and appropriately to public address codes, telephones, radios, alarms, and various emergencies. No phone calls, please – only applicants being considered for interviews will be contacted.

The Mariners’ Museum is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Equal Access employer and actively encourages applications from minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.
