The Biological Sciences Division – Facilities Services (BSD-FS) group provides the environment in which these meaningful results can happen.

    We are responsible for managing approximately 2 million gross feet of space located throughout the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus. We serve many community members including but not limited to: research and non-research faculty, principal investigators, laboratory staff, residents, hospital staff, undergraduate students and post-doctoral scholars.

    BSD-FS consists of the following major functional areas of responsibility: 1) Planning, Design and Construction, 2) Project Management Services, 3) Building Management, 4) Space Management, 5) Capital Planning, 6) Lease Management, 7) Architectural Services, 8) Signage, and 9) Furniture. Job Summary The job supervises a team of support staff responsible for the materials and services operation while supporting the efficient distribution of materials and services to job sites and other inventory stocking locations on campus.

    The BSD-FS Dock Manager supports the achievement of BSD’s scientific and

    education:

    al goals through effective delivery of logistical and event operation services across the BSD’s campus buildings (Cummings, Kovler, KCBD, BSLC, GCIS, and Hull Court). As a BSD-FS Dock Manager, this role acts as the main point of contact supporting the building occupants from executing effective shipping and receiving services to event set-up and tear-down services while actively working towards progressing the BSD’s Mission, Vision, and Values and Elevate 2035 initiative and beyond.

    The Dock Manager has frequent contact with research staff, faculty, department administrators, other University departments, vendors, BSD-FS Building Managers, contractors and regulatory organizations. To achieve this mission, the Dock Manager directly manages and oversees the BSD-FS Service Workers located at the KCBD dock, which serves as the primary hub for dock services across the BSD campus.

    The Dock Manager must be able to communicate with all levels of personnel in an accurate and concise manner as demanded by the situation. The Dock Manager may be required to work non-standard work hours in support of dock activities. These activities may include major laboratory deliveries, staff support for large-scale events, and emergency situations.

    The Dock Manager will be required to not only implement existing programs/policies, but to develop and implement new and improved policies to better fit the mission of the dock team and operation.

    Responsibilities:

    Supervises effective delivery of logistical services for all BSD campus buildings. Administers, implements, and enforces effective policies and procedures with the BSD-FS union clerk staff; including staff scheduling based on business needs in collaboration with the BSD-FS Director of Plant and Facility Operations.

    • Manages KCBD loading dock space to create a safe and organized workplace environment.
    • Manages package receipt and delivery activities for the BSD campus buildings, including lost/misplaced packages and tanks.

    Directly supervises BSD-FS union clerk staff.

    • Maintain and provide equipment necessary for completing dock activities (e.g. forklift, delivery vehicles)

    This includes monitoring staff usage of equipment, and scheduling maintenance service for equipment as needed.

    • Coordinate equipment disposal service in collaboration with departmental/divisional groups.
    • Collaborate with BSD Building Management group on scheduling BSD-FS staff for events scheduled in BSD space.
    • Monitor and report package/tank delivery services via internal logistics system (QTrak).
    • Track and manage BSD-FS union clerk staff administrative needs including safety training compliance, attendance, and interdisciplinary action.
    • Perform financial purchasing activities on behalf of BSD-FS team (including BSD-FS Building Management) for needed office items, dock equipment, invoices for contractual services.
    • Perform dock tasks on an as-needed basis.
    • Maintains shipping and receiving activities and records.
    • Resolves related shipping, receiving, and distribution problems.
    • Coordinates with vendors and Budget to ensure that quality and pricing of supplies and equipment meet expectations.
    • Hires, evaluates, and conducts performance evaluations.
    • Plans and assigns work; exercises quality and quantity controls.
    • Responsible for daily operation and regular maintenance of shipping & receiving equipment; authorizes purchase of operating necessities; determines need and orders repair service.
    • Collaborates with manager regarding building management and maintenance.

    Places and monitors work requests. Supervises projects, and serves as liaison to central facilities staff and outside contractors.

    College or university degree in related field. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Operations Management or similar degree, or Associate’s degree in HVAC Engineering/Technology or Facilities/Operations Management.
