Lifeguard
Westtown School Summer Camp is currently seeking several experienced lifeguards to work June 8 - August 7, 2026. Summer Camp lifeguards will supervise and ensure a safe environment at the camp’s pool and waterfront activities. Additionally, lifeguards will assist in the management and physical operation of the pool and waterfront facilities and equipment. The regular hours will be 8:30 am to 4:15 pm.
Westtown School Summer Camp is a traditional day camp program serving children ages 4 to 14, located on Westtown School’s 600+ acre campus near West Chester, PA. At Westtown School Summer Camp, discovery and education await every child in a creative, supportive, and inclusive environment rooted in the school’s outdoor education traditions. Camp staff members lead campers in a wide variety of action-based educational projects every day. Our camp programs reflect the highest standards of respect and cooperation between counselors and campers.
Essential Responsibilities
- Supervise and guard all pool and waterfront activities;
- Provide supervision during all aquatic activities;
- Utilize appropriate first aid, CPR and other emergency management services as needed;
- Understand and implement appropriate responses to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the waterfront;
- Evaluate aquatic abilities of campers and staff;
- Assist waterfront instructional staff in program areas such as swimming and boating;
- Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures while in their program activity;
- Assist in the delivery and supervision of all water activities and special events at the waterfront;
- Conduct routine checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair;
- Assist with daily cleaning of the waterfront area, keeping it free of hazards and debris;
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Current lifeguard certification
- Current certification in first aid and CPR
- Prior training and experience in waterfront activities
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in the water
- Effective communication skills and the ability to provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate safety techniques
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Ability to lift 25-50 lbs.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying water conditions.
