Wilderness Expedition Leader
Camp Chief Ouray | YMCA of the Rockies

Camp Chief Ouray is hiring Wilderness Expedition Leaders to guide campers through unforgettable backcountry experiences—while building confidence, character, and community.
Your Summer, Reimagined
As a Wilderness Expedition Leader, you’ll co-lead small groups of campers on multi-day outdoor adventures that may include:
Hiking & backpacking Mountain biking Horse packing Rock climbing
Programs range from 1–3 weeks, giving campers the chance to explore the outdoors, grow as leaders, and challenge themselves—safely and intentionally.
You’ll provide 24-hour guidance, mentorship, and care, ensuring every camper feels supported, empowered, and inspired.

What You’ll Do
- Lead and facilitate outdoor expeditions and educational programs
Teach outdoor skills, safety practices, and leadership principles
Foster strong relationships and a positive, inclusive camp culture
Model risk management, adaptability, and decision-making in the field
- Track camper progress and provide meaningful written and verbal feedback
- Collaborate closely with co-leaders, vendors, and leadership staff
Uphold safety protocols and maintain equipment and camp facilities
Who We’re Looking For
You’re a great fit if you:
Are 21+ years old with a valid U.S. driver’s license
Have 3+ years of experience in outdoor education or backcountry travel
Have experience working with youth in a camp or outdoor setting
Thrive in a shared leadership role and value teamwork
Are or willing to become WFA & CPR/First Aid certified
Can hike rugged terrain, lift 50 lbs, and work in all weather
Are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism
(Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus!)
