    Job Description

    General Function:

    Under the supervision of the Child Care Director and in harmony with the mission and values of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Camp Site Director shall be responsible for assisting in developing and managing all aspects of a licensed summer day camp program in accordance with the Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers and policies of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum of 21 years of age. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience required; core competency and course work required per the Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers. At least one year experience in a related field; YMCA experience preferred. Minimum of 1 year staff supervisory experience required.

    A Commercial Driver’s License (Class C) with Passenger Endorsement preferred. Certification in the YMCA of the USA Day Camp training series preferred. Background must include strong skills in parent relations, staff development, and child development. Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 30 days prior to first day of working camp.

    Negative TB test required within the last 2 years. Medication Administration Training (MAT) Certification required prior to first day of working camp. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.

    Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, Virginia State Police background check, and Child Protective Services check.

    Essential Functions:

    • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.

    Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

    • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
    • Provide accurate rosters for the weekly attendance and transportation.
    • Assist the Camp Director in design and implement of a curriculum that is age appropriate and challenging while encouraging growth and development for the campers. Activities should provide for skill development and program progression.
    • Assist in facilitation and coordination of transportation operations and ensure the overall security of the campers during pick-up and drop-off.
    • Assists in maintaining an orderly arrangement and appearance of the Center through attractive and functional equipment, set-up, and decorations.
    • Assist in the purchase, care, maintenance, and storage of program supplies and equipment in accordance with the operating budget with direction from the Regional Camp Director.

    Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

    • Follow Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers and department Platinum standards.

    Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate. Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.

    • Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow branch Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).

    Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Youth and Family Services Department and branch operations to ensure an excellent member experience.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

    • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluating all employees and volunteers within the summer day camp programs under the direct supervision of the Regional Summer Camp Director.
    • Assist with planning, supervising, implementing, and evaluating the camp program.
    • Communicate with parents and address concerns as they arise.

    Skills and Ability Requirements:

    Ability to communicate and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to school age childcare participants. Ability to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

    Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities. Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as budget preparation and program planning. Ability to reason and define difficult problems with limited direction as to means and results.

    Physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children’s activities. Ability to respond to emergency situations.

    Effect on End Results:

    The membership growth and retention plan for the branch is achieved. A high degree of member satisfaction is achieved as measured by Net Promoters. A positive image of the YMCA is portrayed to members, staff, volunteers and the community. A pleasant and comfortable working environment is maintained for all staff.

Superior quality standards are met as evidenced by department Platinum Score Results and maintaining licensure.
