YMCA OF SUMTER:
Summer Camp Counselor
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Summer Camp Counselor at Camp Mac Boykin intentionally fosters a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined. Responsibilities will include safety and supervision of an assigned group of campers. The Summer Camp Counselor will work in cooperation with other YMCA staff to provide a safe and fun experience for campers.

Qualifications:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supervise a group of campers during scheduled work, maintaining safe ratios by not leaving an area unless adequate supervision is present
- Ensure a culture of inclusion that builds and celebrates diversity within the Y and our community
- Build relationships with campers and provide individual guidance and support to campers throughout the camp week
- Implement positive group control and behavior management
Use proper group control inside, outside, and during transitions to maintain accurate head counts at all times
- Enforce and follow established policies and procedures and execute sound judgment
- Demonstrate and role model respect to YMCA property and maintain a clean and safe environment, keeping all equipment used in one’s program in good order
- Report all program changes and equipment needs, and problems to the Camp Director or Camp Coordinator
Attend all training, activities, and staff meetings
- Assist campers in the lake during group swim time and maintain active supervision
- Lead devotions, songs, games, activities or skits as scheduled
Branch and association responsibilities and/or other duties & activities as assigned by leadership
- Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must have the ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the ground) for long periods of time Must have the ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time Must be comfortable in water Requires bending, pulling, crouching, leaning, kneeling, walking, pushing, climbing and jumping
The employee must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust Hearing abilities required is normal tone of voice up to 30 feet Will be subject to the elements of nature (heat, cold, insects, wind, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 17 years of age Must love working with school age children Must have an enthusiastic personality, be attentive to details, must be service oriented with excellent written, oral and human relations skills Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities
Must be mature, decisive, and responsible and must be able to put the needs of members and program participants ahead of his/her own needs Must be customer service oriented Current CPR & First Aid Certifications including adult, child and infant and obstructed airway maneuver Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in such a way as to be easily understood by children, staff and parents
Visual and auditory ability to supervise and respond to critical situations with children Ability to work efficiently independently with little supervision and as part of a team Organizational, time management & Problem/Resolution abilities
EFFECT ON END RESULT:
The effectiveness of the incumbent can be measured by:
- Lead engaging activities for the campers
The well-being and character development of the participants Quality of member and program participant service delivery Assuring clean & well-maintained department(s) equipment and facilities The positive impact has on the participants and their families that will be shown be steady growth and retention of registered participants in all related programs
High morale, retention and satisfaction of staff, volunteers and members Positive attitude and enthusiastic performance of duties Assuring Safety & liability of programs/staff/participants Attention to detail and follow through in the execution of all job components Effectiveness will also be measured by the extent to which the incumbent is a supportive staff member achieving the goals of the YMCA of Sumter
