New Hire: $31.43  · 90 days: $32.99 ·  1 year: $34.68  ·  2 years: $36.47 ·  3 years: $38.39

About Assistant Park Ranger:
Under the direction of the District Park Ranger, assists in the overall management and daily operations of Morgan Creek park. This position supports park law enforcement, facility maintenance, natural resource management, and public engagement. The Assistant Park Ranger ensures safety through enforcement of park regulations, oversees maintenance and repair activities, provides direction to seasonal staff, and supports campground operations.  

Essential Functions

  • Patrols park areas to ensure visitor safety, enforces laws and park regulations, issues citations, and performs arrests as needed.
  • Responds to emergencies and unforeseen situations such as accidents, rescues, environmental hazards, and disturbances; administers first aid/CPR.
  • Assists with coordination and scheduling of seasonal staff; provides task direction and monitors work quality and safety.
  • Performs technical maintenance and repair of park facilities and systems including plumbing, electrical, roofing, carpentry, and mechanical tasks.
  • Operates vehicles and heavy equipment such as tractors, dump trucks, trailers, snowplows, mowers, and specialized forestry tools.
  • Maintains campground, cabin, shelter, and lodge operations; addresses maintenance needs and communicates with the public regarding reservations and regulations.
  • Supports natural resource management through prescribed burns, invasive species removal, forestry work, habitat restoration, and trail development.
  • Coordinates with local law enforcement agencies and preserves the scene of crimes; interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects as necessary.
  • Maintains safety and condition of park facilities through regular inspections in accordance with County Risk Management guidelines.
  • Provides excellent customer service, issues permits, returns public communications, and assists with public engagement and education as needed.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Associate's degree in park management, conservation, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field 
    OR
  • High school diploma and 1 to 3 years of experience in a related field required.
Special Requirements: 
  • Commercial Class A Driver's License with airbrakes and passenger endorsement required within 6 months.
  • Must pass all certified peace officer hiring requirements before offer of position such as MMPI, POST tests, and all physical fitness minimum requirements. 
  • Certification as a Peace Officer through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, CPR Certification, and completion of Advanced First Aid Training course required. 
  • Possession of a valid Iowa Driver's License required. 
  • Will be required to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License. 
  • Weekend, evening and holiday work required. 
  • Must pass a DOT physical examination which includes a drug test with random testing as determined by Linn County and Federal guidelines. 
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
