Job Title:  Camp Counselor                           FLSA Status:    Part Time/Seasonal 
Reports to:  Preschool & Family Director                               
Location: McClurg Rd, Boardman
Schedule Requirements: M/W/F 8:30 am-1:30 pm June 9-August 15. Must be available for training in May, must commit to at least 8 of the 10-week sessions. 
                                                                                                                                             
POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing leadership for all camp activities, keeping track of all campers in their assigned group, consistent care and safety of all campers. Must be committed to staying engaged with their group at all times. Responsibilities include providing a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Assist camp team with planning and carrying out all activities with a particular small group.
  2. Provide a safe, happy and secure environment for all children.
  3.  
  4. Greet and communicate with each parent/child entering the program area.
  5. Engage in supervised activities with children.
  6. Redirect children, discipline only in non-threatening, non-aggressive manner.
  7. Monitor check in and check out information, make sure to check photo Id against Escort List and that parent/guardian’s names are listed on list before dismissing child to them upon dismissal.
  8. Clean room and prepare for next day at end of each shift.
  9. Fill out accident/incident forms completely and turn in to director for follow up.
  10. Notify Director of any concerns or supplies needed.
  11. Dress appropriately for duty (YMCA staff shirt/jacket, name tag, khaki or black pants).
  12. Know the YMCA emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
  13. Find own substitute when not able to work scheduled shift unless scheduled vacation time.
  14. Be enthusiastic, friendly and smile.
  15. Incorporate YMCA Character Development values into program.
  16. Recognize and report suspected child abuse to Director.
  17. Serve as a good role model demonstrating positive values and safe behavior.
  18. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures.
  19. Make families feel comfortable and at ease.
  20. Be open, friendly and approachable to families.
  21. Initiate interaction with and between families.
  22. Frequently ask if there is any way you can help.
  23. Get to know members personally. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  24. Introduce families to other members and staff.
  25. Invite families to participate in programs.
  26. Be knowledgeable about program areas and share information with families.
  27. Be knowledgeable about the YMCA, its programs and policies.
  28. Encourage participation in facility and program orientations.
  29. Recommend participation in a variety of Y programs.
  30. Be able to articulate the YMCA’s mission, values, and benefits.
  31. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  32. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  33. Attends all staff meetings and trainings.
  34. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Entry requirements: Must be at least 16 years of age with previous experience working with children. Must demonstrate an ability to work well with preschoolers and parents and be fun, energetic, creative and enthusiastic. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
  2. Requirements  as of employment: YMCA New Staff Orientation, CPR/AED, First Aid certifications, Child Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment, and YMCA Leader training required within 30 days of hire date. All required forms need to be on file prior to first day of work.
