Position Type: Seasonal (Part-Time, Full-Time)
Compensation: $19.00 - $21.00
The Lead OE Instructor plays a dual role: instructing hands-on outdoor education classes and serving as a mentor and point of contact for the instructor team during daily operations. Under the guidance of the Program Director, the Lead Instructor supports program logistics, staff development, and instructional quality while maintaining a strong presence in the field.
All responsibilities of an Outdoor Education Instructor, plus:
Act as a lead point of contact for the instructor team during daily program operations.
Model best practices in instruction, engagement, safety, and guest relations.
Mentor, coach, and support new and returning instructors—including assisting with onboarding, curriculum training, lesson shadowing, and reinforcing expectations.
Help coordinate daily instructor task assignments (e.g., classroom setup, meal supervision, program support).
Monitor teaching quality and provide in-the-moment feedback to promote consistency and growth.
Step in to lead classes or evening programs as needed for coverage.
Maintain open and timely communication with the Program Director, sharing updates, concerns, and feedback.
Assist with supply tracking and inventory management.
Identify and communicate opportunities for program improvement.
Support student arrivals, orientations, and guest interactions during high-traffic periods.
Help manage escalated behavior issues or emergencies, following safety protocols.
Support other departments and programs as needed, including MOD (Manager on Duty) shifts.
Deliver excellent customer service to all guests—students, chaperones, and teachers.
All OE Instructor competencies, plus:
Team Leadership – Sets a professional example, motivates peers, and maintains team morale.
Mentorship & Coaching – Provides feedback and guidance to instructors to elevate instruction and program consistency.
Operational Coordination – Assists in daily planning and ensures smooth transitions across programs.
Decision-Making & Problem-Solving – Responds effectively to last-minute changes, challenges, or guest concerns.
Communication with Leadership – Maintains clear and proactive communication with the Program Director.
Background or degree in education, environmental science, recreation, or a related field.
3+ years of experience working with youth in outdoor education, camps, or classroom settings.
Prior leadership experience in a supervisory or mentor capacity.
Familiarity with NGSS and California State Standards (grades 4–8).
Experience training or supporting peer instructors or leading new staff onboarding.
CPR/First Aid certified (or willing to obtain prior to employment).
Ability to stand, walk, and teach outdoors for extended periods in varying weather.
Lift and carry up to 30 lbs (equipment, supplies, etc.).
Participate in physically active programs (e.g., canoeing, ropes course, archery).
Maintain energy and professionalism through full-day programming with youth groups.
