The Weekend Ranger will typically work Saturday, Sunday, one weekday, and all holidays, for a total of 20 to 29 hours per week.
Tentative hours are Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and one weekday from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. However, hours may vary depending on department needs.

JOB SUMMARY
|
The position of Park Ranger is required to work evenings and weekends patrolling parks. The Parks Department is looking for candidates who can resolve conflict in a peaceful manner, create a safer park environment, and communicate parks activities with patrons.
Park Rangers are responsible for overseeing the City’s parks and enforcement of park rules and policies. Rangers must acquire knowledge of geography in the City and the department's procedures and communicate with the public about programs. Park Rangers must be positive role models with exemplary leadership skills, quality communication skills, and a positive, friendly demeanor.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
|
- Daily patrol of Elkhart City parks and facilities.
- Ensuring public safety within the parks system.
- Ensure the timely locking of park restrooms & needed facilities.
- Enforce city ordinance violations, inform, and educate the public about park amenities and rules.
- Document damage to equipment, hazards, and vandalism.
- Complete daily ranger report of parks patrolled and participate in monthly staff meetings.
- Learn and enforce park regulations, city ordinances, and other park rules.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
|
- Assist in cleaning the parks when necessary.
- Assist with Parks cleanup in Spring and Fall.
- Giving public tours and answering patron questions.
- Locate and coordinate placement of signage throughout the park system.
- Help lead nature, wilderness survival, and outdoor programs
- Positively interact with park patrons and assist them when needed
- Serve the public to make the Elkhart parks pleasant for the people and wildlife who inhabit them.
- Interact with wildlife and animals that inhabit the park
- Moving supplies and equipment for department
- Other Duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
|
- High School diploma.
- Background or experience in customer service, public safety, security is preferred.
- Driver’s License required.
|
|
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
|
- First Aid/CPR
- Conflict Resolution
- Comfortability working with the public and attending politely to issues and concerns in the parks.
- Ability to use radio for communications with dispatch and rangers.
- Familiarity with Elkhart City park ordinances.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
|
- Park Rangers must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to walk and stand for the majority of the shift while patrolling.
- Be willing to handle trash and litter in the parks.
- Must be able to drive at night.
- Must have good hearing.

WORKING CONDITIONS
|
- Walk and patrol outside for prolonged periods in all weather conditions
- Be comfortable handling wild animals in need of attention.
- Frequent occurrence of getting in and out of ranger vehicle.
- Must be available nights, weekends, & holidays.

POST OFFER TESTING REQUIREMENTS
|
- The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
- Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
