The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Project Assistant located in Fairbanks!


What you will be doing:

Participate in the Wildlife Health and Veterinary Services program data and records management. Serve as manager of data generated by various wildlife capture, health and disease surveillance activities, supporting cervid health research and surveillance, including sample collecting, curating, processing, and performing laboratory analysis, diagnostic testing, and basic statistical analysis and report writing; tracking budget spending, submitting invoices, order supplies and equipment, maintain laboratory and field supplies or equipment; providing support to DWC personnel in wildlife health projects.

The incumbent will be an integral part of the program ensuring that wildlife health data, records and samples are managed, cataloged, archived and stored appropriately to ensure accessibility to staff and stakeholders.

Working with the statewide program, this position will provide exposure to a variety of   ADF&G staff and projects across the state. The position will contribute to a multitude of conservation and management programs, especially the capital improvement project on cervid health surveillance. The position will provide the candidate with a wide range of skills within wildlife biology, disease, project design/management, and data management. The incumbent with make a meaningful contribution to the program mission of protecting the health of wildlife populations. The position is seasonally very busy with routine office based duties but there will be opportunities for professional development in the candidates area of interest during the less busy times of the year. 


The working conditions you can expect:

The job is at the ADF&G Region III headquarters in Fairbanks. A desktop work station within the Wildlife Conservation wing will be in a shared office space. Daily work will be extensive in data entry and management, budget/expenditures and record keeping at a computer work station. Assistance with necropsies and disease investigations and laboratory maintenance occurs in the Wildlife Laboratories. This position does not typically include live-animal capture field work or animal husbandry but may include assisting with field necropsies or sample collection and handling. There are frequent driving of state owned pickup trucks to the airport and FedEx and to pick up carcasses.

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  •  Experience managing and improving databases by data entry, quality control, and reporting.

  • Descriptive and basic statistical analysis skills.

  • Experience working in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access or other relational databases. 

  • Comfortable working around strong-smelling biological material and chemicals in a laboratory environment.  

  • Exhibit a strong attention to detail, good writing skills, and good interpersonal/ communication skills.

  • Ability to keep pace with a busy, ever-changing work environment.

  • Interest in wildlife biology, wildlife disease, or wildlife management.

Special Note:

  • Due to the nature of the duties requiring access to federally regulated Controlled Substances, if offered the position, you will be required to sign an affidavit attesting that you do not have a conviction or pending charge involving misuse of a controlled substance.

  • Experience managing and improving databases by data entry, quality control, and reporting.

  • Requires extended periods of work at a computer work station entering data and test results filing, responding to email requests for data.

  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Driver’s license.

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Reading Comprehension: Understands and interprets written material, including technical material, rules, regulations, instructions, reports, charts, graphs, or tables; applies what is learned from written material to specific situations

 

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Training from an accredited college or university in any field and/or experience such as performing research; interpreting data; applying, interpreting, and disseminating technical, statutory, and/or regulatory requirements; and/or experience in community development, research, social services, economics, public administration, planning, or a closely related field.
