Position Summary
Under general supervision, and/or following procedures, and/or routines, the Provisional Assistant Zoological Park Maintainer (AZPMs) is responsible for maintaining the Bronx Zoo grounds, facilities and equipment to ensure the highest standards of grounds maintenance and safety for Zoo visitors, employees, animals and the facility.
Principal Responsibilities- Grounds maintenance, including repair, renovation, alteration, modification, maintenance and installation of, including but not limited to, roadways, paths, look outs, sidewalks, exhibits, enclosures, benches, trees, shrubs and other plants, lawns, river banks, waterfalls and pilings, special events, exhibits and animal holding areas, the Bronx Zoo forest and other structures and facilities, in both public and non-public areas, throughout the grounds all 265 acres of the Bronx Zoo.
- Snow removal operations and storm cleanup work.
- Equipment operation includes weed whackers, lawn mowers, backpack blowers, chain and pole saws, brush hogs, power brooms, snow throwers and other hand tools and small engine or battery powered equipment used in ground maintenance operations.
- Support garbage and trash maintenance by working on garbage trucks, assist in refuse removal and clean NYC sidewalks in the perimeter of the Bronx Zoo
- Vehicle operations - drive manure trucks, and operate electric carts and trucks under 18,000 lbs;
- Operate forklifts and genie lifts in the course of daily activities
- Assist in buildings including moving furniture or other required office movement tasks
- Support other departments with trenching, clearing of fence lines, clearing of drains/catch basins before and during storms, post storm cleanup.
- Delivery and pick up of supplies and/or equipment or to other WCS facilities
Internal Qualification RequirementsJob Qualifications
Experience in the use of hand tools, small engine or battery powered equipment and snow removal equipment is strongly preferred.
Ability to represent WCS in a professional manner and to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, and the general public.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions.
Tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use tools (e.g. drill, wire cutters, computer keyboard) and operate equipment.
Some tasks require climbing, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.
