Does the thought of teaching others the basics of skiing and snowboarding appeal to you?

The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a SKI/SNOWBOARD instructor. This position’s focus is to teach skiers/boarders the basics of skiing and the safety rules of the hill.  Applicant should have their own equipment with ability to transport it to the ski hill.

This is temporary, non-benefited position working various hours on Saturday and Sunday and other non-school days that the ski hill is open during the months of October thru May.

Minimum qualifications:

    • Some high school education with relevant experience.  
    • Current certification as PSIA or AASI or past certification 
    • Past teaching experience in a recreational setting, sports, etc. 
    • Must be 18 years of age or older
    • First Aid/CPR (training will be provided if needed)

Position is open until filled, review of applicants begins on November 5, 2025.
 

Primary Duties and responsibilities:

  • Has a serious focus on safety and whereabouts of all students. In addition, is able to teach the student safety as part of the lesson experience.
  • Promote Valdez Parks and Recreation programs to guests and staff.
  • Understands what the beginner ski or ride progressions are for different age levels of students and has the ability to demonstrate them to the class. Additionally, the instructor will be able to identify ability level in students and split them into groups by ability level as needed.
  • Identifies different learning styles among students and is able to effectively demonstrate different teaching styles to reflect them.
  • Attend department and facility staff meetings and in-service trainings, as required.
  • Provide positive customer service. Models the values, philosophy, and mission statement of the Valdez Parks and Recreation Department
  • Acts as a team member, maintaining a cooperative attitude with all employees, supervisors and staff.
  • Responds quickly and effectively to a wide variety of situations including possible emergencies while maintaining composure and keeping students calm.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and other characteristics:
  • Knowledge of Valdez Ski Hill policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of mountain safety
  • Able to ski or snowboard at least at an intermediate level
  • Must own ski or snowboard equipment
  • Skilled in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks
  • Skilled in providing customer service and responding to public inquiries
  • Skilled in oral and written communication

Physical requirements and work environment:
Work is performed in extreme outdoor conditions.   May be subject to frequent standing, walking, skiing, and lifting.  May spend up to 50% of work time performing physical labor.  May spend up to 80% of work time standing and/or walking and/or skiing.
