The Cape Henry Collegiate Summer Program is a vibrant and successful department in an Independent College Preparatory School setting. The summer staff are valued and important members of the CHC Community. We seek counselors who want to lead and mentor in support of providing an exemplary experience in support of our school mission and core values.
The summer camp counselor is responsible for supervising, guiding, and ensuring the safety of campers while facilitating and participating in activities. Beyond basic childcare, a counselor serves as a mentor and role model, helping children build confidence, develop social skills, and create lasting memories.
Requirements:
- Camper supervision: Responsible for the well-being of a group of campers, monitoring them at all times during activities, meals, and rest periods to ensure their physical and emotional safety.
- Activity leadership: Plan, lead, and actively participate in a variety of camp activities, such as sports, arts and crafts, games, swimming, and hiking.
- Role modeling: Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating appropriate behavior, teamwork, and a respectful attitude toward both campers and other staff members.
- Mediation and support: Help resolve conflicts between campers, provide emotional support for issues like homesickness, and foster an inclusive environment where all campers feel valued.
- Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with fellow counselors, camp leadership, and parents regarding campers' progress, behavior, and any concerns.
- Camp operations: Assist with the daily setup and cleanup of camp facilities, activities, and equipment. Keep accurate records, such as daily attendance and incident reports.
- Safety and protocol: Know and enforce all camp safety rules, emergency procedures, and first aid protocols.
Necessary skills and qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience working with children or teenagers in a recreational, educational, or childcare setting is preferred.
- Personal qualities: A successful counselor is enthusiastic, patient, creative, adaptable, and possesses strong communication and leadership skills.
- Teamwork: The ability to work cooperatively as part of a team with other counselors and staff is essential for a smooth camp operation.
- Physical ability: The job can be physically demanding and requires stamina to participate in a variety of outdoor activities in varying weather conditions and be active for extended periods.
- Reliability: Counselors must be dependable and able to follow through on their responsibilities, as they are entrusted with the safety and well-being of the campers.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with summer program expectations
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone or walkie-talkie
