For 150 years, American Forests has stood boldly at the forefront of the conservation movement, working collaboratively and innovatively to ensure that all people have access to the benefits of trees. As we look ahead to the next 150, continued collective action will be essential to securing a healthy, climate-resilient future for all. To support this work, we are looking for an Accountant II to join our Operations team.

Experience with Unanet is highly preferred, as it is our primary ERP system. Major responsibilities include:

    • Record incoming revenue, including private contributions, federal and state grants, and contracts.
    • Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding balances.

    Audit and Compliance

    • Support preparation of annual audit workpapers and Form 990 schedules.
    • Maintain documentation supporting internal controls and compliance with federal grant regulations.
    • Assist with ongoing compliance reviews and audit preparedness.

    Other Duties

    • Collaborate with other departments to support budgeting, forecasting, and grant proposal development
    • Provide back-up support to other members of the finance team as needed
    • Participate in finance team meetings, organization-wide learning, and DEIA initiatives

    What We’re Looking For

We don’t expect you to check every single box. If this role excites you, we want to hear from you! We’re interested in your ability to learn, collaborate, and bring fresh perspectives.

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required.
    • At least 5 years of accounting experience, ideally within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles.
    • Experience with accounting systems with cost structure, cost allocations and rates (Sage Intacct, DelTek, etc.) or similar, but Unanet ERP is strongly preferred.
    • Experience with federal grants, including reporting and compliance under 2 CFR 200.
