    NATURE OF WORK: The Day Camp Counselor is responsible for directing a wide variety of recreation activities for the 10-week summer day camp program for up to 40 children, ages 5-11.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Employee possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform all the essential duties of the job safely and satisfactorily, including, but not limited to municipal governance, teamwork, problem-solving, relationship-building, customer service, detail oriented, technology/equipment proficiency, policy adherence, time management, result-orientation, research and analyzing data, decision-making, self-motivation, stewardship, integrity, and upholding our EDGE core values.
    • Ability to listen to, read, understand, and communicate the English language both orally and in writing so others can understand, such as correspondence, report writing, and emails.
    • To support consistent high-quality service for our community and each other, it is the expectation of all employees to be punctual and have good attendance and to communicate effectively for scheduling conflicts or when taking leave according to city policy.
    • Protects health and safety (emotional and physical) of all campers.
    • Assists in providing experiences that promote individual and group growth.
    • Assists with planning, organizing, and directing a wide variety of recreation programs, field trips, and special events.
    • Supports activities such as crafts, science projects, games, and reading.
    • Collaborates with Director and camp staff to create an effective discipline plan for campers. Monitors camper behavior daily.
    • Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of recreation supplies, and equipment.
    • Follows assigned work schedule and camp schedule.
    • Supervises participants on all bus trips, at the swimming pool, and during special events.
    • Actively participates in camp activities, including regular interaction with staff and campers.
    • Reviews and understands camp policies and procedures.
    • Reports to the Recreation Supervisor-Programs and Seniors as needed regarding programs, activities, special events, supplies, or any equipment with problems or in need of repair.
    • Assists with planning, organizing, and directing a wide variety of recreation programs, field trips, and special events, such as crafts, science projects, games, and reading.
    • Collaborates and communicates with parents via app, phone calls, and in-person as needed in absence of the Day Camp Director.
    • Collaborates with the Director to create an effective discipline plan for campers. Monitors camper behavior daily.
    • Completes end of shift report each day.
    • Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of recreation supplies, and equipment.
    • Reports concerns regarding programs, activities, special events, supplies or equipment problems to Recreation Supervisor-Programs and Seniors. Ability to instruct a wide variety of recreational, educational, and cultural activities for youth.
    • Knowledge of rules and regulations for various sports and athletic activities.
    • Ability to work well with small children aged 5 to 11 and their parents or guardians.
    • As a member of the City of Evans team, employees are privileged to serve each other and the community; therefore, will be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSURE:

    Required:

    • High School diploma or equivalent; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
    • Valid Colorado Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
    • Possession of or ability to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Leisure Services, Education, or related field and/or three years’ experience working with children.

    * Must meet the following qualifications:

    • Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention.
    • Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers. This requirement does not apply to day camps that do not regularly use a playground.
    • Must have at least three (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children.
    • Must complete state required training prior to camp beginning.

    Preferred:

    • Previous experience working with children, ideally in a camp setting.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish
    • Experience in public/municipal sector.

    PHYSICAL AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    *The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, sit, walk, squat, talk, hear and see. The employee is required to perform lifting 25 pounds.

    Employee is required to work indoors, and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions, and may be exposed to extreme heat, extreme cold, loud noise, toxic materials, and vibration.
