Position Description: Lifeguard (Summer Aquatics) Status: Seasonal (Minimum 5-week commitment) Location: Basking Ridge, NJ Compensation: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour (Final compensation will be determined based on experience and education)
- Schedule: Required Training Week of June 15th | Hours determined by pool schedule
The Candidate Profile We are looking for focused, vigilant, and professional safety leaders to join our Aquatics team. The ideal Lifeguard is not just a strong swimmer, but a "proactive protector" who understands that safety is built on prevention. You are someone who takes pride in maintaining a "disciplined deck,” enforcing rules consistently and fairly while remaining approachable to campers and staff. You are a team player who is always "rescue-ready," maintaining a high level of physical and mental alertness throughout the day.
Position Summary Lifeguards are the primary guardians of the Pingry pool environment. Reporting to the Aquatics Director, this role is responsible for maintaining 100% swimmer safety through surveillance and rule enforcement. Lifeguards support the broader summer mission by ensuring a safe and organized environment for both instructional swim lessons and recreational free-swim programming.
Core Responsibilities Surveillance & Emergency Response
- Maintain active, uninterrupted supervision of pool areas, scanning assigned zones to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
Respond immediately to emergencies according to the established Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and provide first aid/CPR as required. Proactively enforce all pool safety rules and deck regulations to prevent accidents before they occur. Program & Deck Support
- Assist in the delivery of swim lessons and support recreational free-swim periods by managing equipment and camper flow.
- Maintain the readiness and organization of safety equipment (rescue tubes, backboards, AEDs) and assist in daily deck setup and breakdown.
- Conduct routine checks of deck conditions and water safety markers, reporting any maintenance or chemical concerns to Aquatics leadership.
Professionalism & Communication Promptly relay all safety concerns, pool-deck issues, or behavioral incidents to the Aquatics Director.
- Maintain professional boundaries with campers, parents, and staff at all times.
Required Qualifications:
Technical Certification: Current Lifeguard Certification, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid (or the ability to obtain these certifications by the start date). Supervision & Reliability: Strong attention to detail, a "safety-first" mindset, and the ability to meet all scheduled shifts.
Professional Poise: The ability to remain calm and authoritative in emergency situations and communicate effectively with diverse age groups. Physical Readiness: Ability to pass all required pre-employment swim tests and maintain the physical stamina required for sessions. Required Clearances & Onboarding
You will be required to work with the Summer Employment Operations Manager to complete all digital onboarding via ADP. Successful completion of background checks, fingerprinting (if applicable), and NJ Sexual Misconduct/Child Abuse Disclosure releases. All current certifications must be uploaded and verified by the Operations Coordinator prior to your first day on the stand.
