Summer Day Camp Counselor - Part Time/Seasonal

Pay Rate Scale: $15.00+/hr; dependent upon qualifications

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Centers Program Manager, the Summer Day Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising and leading day-to-day camp activities for groups of children. This seasonal position requires a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and responsible individual to create a fun and engaging camp experience. Counselors will work approximately 30-40 hours per week in a dynamic and energetic summer camp setting.

Essential Duties

• Supervise campers daily, including during special activities (i.e., water activities) and off-site field trips.
• Foster a positive and encouraging camp environment.
• Attend mandatory staff orientation and trainings.
• Plan, implement, and lead a variety of camp activities.
• Competently and reliably instruct assigned activities.
• Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all campers at all times.
• Develop and maintain effective public relations/communications with co-workers, campers, and parents to foster positive relationships.
• Keep program areas clean, organized, and well-maintained.
• Maintain accurate records, and alert Camp Director to any issues or concerns.
• Assist in evaluating assigned programs and make recommendations for improvement.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 16 years old with an understanding of Day Camp procedures—prior experience working with children required.
• Preference is given to those with a degree in education, recreation, or a related field or comparable experience.
• Must have current CPR and First Aid certification or be willing to obtain certification before the start date.
• Ability to plan and lead recreational activities for children between 6-12 years old.
• Should have an outgoing personality with good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements, Skills, and Abilities

While performing the duties of this job, some bending, kneeling, and reaching for items on the floor and high shelves are required. Performing repetitive hand and arm movements, such as when playing games or sports. Able to sit and stand for sustained periods while interacting with children. Able to walk up to one mile to camp activity destinations. Frequent movement, including getting up and down from the floor and child-sized tables and chairs to accomplish daily activities. Physical setup of programs, special events, services, and facilities. Reading handwritten information and writing legibly. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employees’ general work area is divided between an indoor smoke-free environment with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting and the outdoors. Employees will be required to work during various weather conditions, including hot, cold, and rainy weather. Some outdoor activities may continue in light rain, while severe weather may require adjusting plans or moving indoors.

Work Status

The Summer Day Camp Counselor position is a seasonal role that typically runs from early June through August. Preseason training will take place in early June, with up to 30 hours of training. The 2026 camp season runs from June 15 through August 14, with counselors expected to work 30-40 hours per week during this time. Opportunities for additional work within the department may be available after the camp season concludes.
