Job Details Level: Management Job Location: Leon A Wurl Service Center - Erie, CO 80516 Position Type: Full Time Salary Range: $96,880.00 - $116,256.00 Salary Job Category: Parks & Recreation The Town of Erie’s Parks Division is seeking an experienced, innovative and proactive leader to join our Parks and Open Space team as our Parks Maintenance Superintendent! This new senior leadership role will partner closely with our existing Natural Resources Superintendent to guide the Division and advance the goals outlined in our 10-year Strategic Plan, which can be found by clicking here.
About the Role:
- Reporting to the Parks and Open Space Division Manager, this Superintendent plays a key role in overseeing parks maintenance operations. This person is responsible for day-to-day operational support, project coordination, maintenance oversight, community engagement, data and asset management, and a wide range of administrative and operational functions.
You will help ensure our parks, trails, open spaces, and recreational amenities are safe, vibrant, and well-maintained for all who use them. Who We’re Looking For We are seeking a candidate with advanced knowledge and hands-on expertise in all areas of parks maintenance—including irrigation systems, playground safety and inspections, athletic field and court maintenance, turf management, and related best practices. The ideal candidate is cross trained across the full spectrum of Parks & Open Space maintenance duties and brings a collaborative, proactive leadership style.

Anticipated Work Schedule: Full-time (Monday-Friday shifts) 40 hours per week with some nights and weekends as needed. The schedule may vary depending on specific division needs and Town events. Work Location: Leon A Wurl Service Center (150 Bonnell Ave, Erie, CO 80516) This position is eligible to work remotely up to one (1) day per week dependent upon successful completion of the probationary period and supervisor approval.

Supervision Exercised:
This position directly supervises full-time supervisors and provides leadership and oversight to the Parks Maintenance and Athletic/Weekend Operations work groups including full-time, part-time, and volunteers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervisory Duties May assume the responsibilities of the Parks & Open Space Division Manager through assignment or delegation, providing leadership in their absence.
- Provide leadership and oversight for assigned work groups, including Parks Maintenance and Athletics/Weekend Operations.
- Collaborate with the Parks & Open Space Division Manager and Park Supervisors to formulate work procedures, crew schedules, and workflow.
- Create, coordinate, and supervise daily and weekly crew assignments, ensuring timely follow-up and tracking of progress.
- Assist in monitoring quality control of divisional service levels.
- Assist with recruitment, interviews, evaluations, disciplinary actions, and retention for part-time and full-time personnel.
Promote and support a culture of workplace safety, including completing and reviewing accident and incident reports.
- Support snow removal operations by coordinating staff, equipment, and snow routes.
- Provide training and supervision to personnel to ensure safe and effective use and maintenance of equipment under both normal and emergency conditions.
- Support and oversee volunteer groups and Youth Corps organizations (e.g., community groups, Boy Scouts, Eagle Scouts), including coordinating work scopes and ensuring successful project completion.
Administrative Duties
- Assist in preparing the Division's annual operational and capital budgets.
- Oversee and inspect the work of consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with contract provisions, Town standards, and legal and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in managing inventory control and organization of the Division's equipment, supplies, and materials, including procurement and cost-effective management.
May review landscape and irrigation plans and prepare recommendations prior to construction; participate in pre-bid, pre-construction, and project progress meetings; develop punch lists and conduct landscape and irrigation inspections.
- Assist in Division planning and policy development.
- Assist with invoicing, budget tracking, P-card processing, and initiating purchase order (PO) and contract requests, ensuring accuracy, compliance with financial policies, and the efficient procurement of services and materials.
- Assist with safety training programs, including scheduling, coordinating materials, and ensuring staff compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
- Oversee the Division’s special event approval process, ensuring events held within parks and open spaces comply with Town policies, safety standards, and resource protection guidelines.
- Manage the irrigation backflow prevention program, ensuring annual certifications are completed in compliance with health and safety regulations to protect the Town's water supply.
- Oversee the operation, programming, and optimization of the Division’s Central Irrigation Control System to promote efficient water use and system performance.
- Coordinate irrigation locating services on Division-maintained properties to protect underground infrastructure and ensure safe excavation and construction activities.
- Manage and oversee routine playground safety inspections to identify hazards, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain safe play environments.
- Oversee regular park safety inspections, addressing potential risks and ensuring facilities meet established safety and maintenance standards.
- Manage athletic field safety inspections to support safe play conditions, proper surface maintenance, and adherence to field use standards.
- Assist with the operation, maintenance, and seasonal management of Town splash pads, ensuring safe, clean, and reliable public water play features.
- Oversee the implementation of turf cultural practices within Division-managed landscapes, including aeration, fertilization, mowing, and other methods that support healthy and sustainable turf conditions.
Serve as the Division’s primary liaison to the Fleet Division of the Utilities Department for overseeing service requests and coordinating fleet procurement. Receive, investigate, and respond to concerns from citizens, other departments, and outside agencies, ensuring appropriate resolution and follow-up.
Qualifications and Benefits:
Minimum Qualifications Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Parks Management, Parks and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Landscape Design/Architecture, Horticulture, Turf/Agronomy, Forestry, or a related field Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience managing multiple parks divisions or functions at a supervisory level
A combination of education and experience may be considered. Certificates/Licenses/Registrations Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record Ability to obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications within three months of hire Desired Qualifications State Qualified Supervisor Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate preferred
Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) preferred Certified Parks and Recreation Professional or related certification preferred
