The Virginia Zoo, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is home to more than 700 animals representing over 150 species. The Virginia Zoo is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Equipment Operator III to join our dynamic team. This is a unique opportunity for someone with heavy equipment experience to work in an exciting, conservation-focused environment. As part of the Zoo’s maintenance and operations team, you will support animal care staff by helping build and maintain exhibits, assist with animal moves, and ensure the safety and beauty of the Zoo’s 53-acre campus through grounds maintenance and infrastructure projects.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $41,503.00 - $47,728.00

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment (e.g., skid steers, backhoes, dump trucks) to support exhibit construction, habitat maintenance, and zoo improvement projects.
  • Assists animal care staff with animal moves, enclosure changes, and exhibit preparation.
  • Performs routine and seasonal grounds maintenance including landscaping, irrigation, grading, snow and storm debris removal, and tree trimming.
  • Works alongside facilities and horticulture teams to maintain walking paths, drainage systems, and visitor amenities.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and ensures all tools are used safely and correctly.
  • Supports emergency response efforts, such as weather-related cleanups or critical maintenance needs.
  • Provides leadership and support when working with contractors or temporary crews.
  • Maintains clear records and logs of equipment usage, maintenance, and supply inventories.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Two years experience as an Equipment Operator or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.

Prior experience in parks, zoos, or public facilities maintenance is preferred.

Additional Information & Requirements

Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  •  Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.

Work Location: 3500 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23504

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm, 40 hours per week
