Job Responsibilities

This employee will assist with all aspects of at-sea sampling, gear and supply management, procurement, data collection, sample processing, and laboratory efforts necessary to support the Coastal Research Section, particularly the Coastal Trawl Survey.

Job Duties Include:
  • Conducting fieldwork.
    • This will include participating in pre-cruise preparation; deploying, retrieving, and maintaining gear; monitoring field supplies; sorting and processing catch, including life history sampling; recording data; daily, cruise, and post-season preparation and clean-up.
  • Assisting Survey Logistics Lead with procurement of supplies and equipment to support survey field and laboratory operations, focused on the Coastal Trawl Survey. 
    • This will include obtaining estimates or bids and working with potential and actual vendors, preparing procurement paperwork, and keeping survey managers informed of costs and purchasing needs. 
  • Assisting with logistics and sampling gear maintenance and development with a focus on the Coastal Trawl Survey.  
    • This will include maintaining or repairing sampling gear and data collection, hardware, monitoring available supplies, loading and unloading research vessels, and facilitating the vessel's readiness for sampling. 
  • Assisting with QA/QC and any field or lab-based data entry related to section surveys. 
  • Assisting with data summarization and report generation.  
  • Maintaining organized paper copies, samples, and electronic files and help keep shared project directories on the server organized.
  • Processing and interpreting life-history samples (ageing, histology, diet, or other) in the laboratory.
  • Maintaining issued equipment and ensuring laboratories are kept clean and tidy. 
  • Participating in assigned workshops or meetings relevant to survey data and objectives. 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with survey logistics (preparation of electronic and physical sampling gear and deployment of gear).  Experience with procurement procedures and record keeping.  Knowledgeable in the identification of SE US fishes and crustaceans desired.  Experience with Microsoft Suite software.  Experience extracting and processing biological samples  desired.  Good communication skills desired.  Ability to negotiate companionways and ladders in rough seas and regularly lift heavy objects (with assistance).  Ability to work long hours (12+ hour shifts) at sea up to ten (10) days at a time, occasionally on weekends or at night. Certified for operation of powered lift trucks (forklifts) or become certified after hire.
