About the Marketing Department:

The Marketing team drives brand awareness, customer engagement and trip bookings through strategic campaigns, compelling content and data-driven insights. They manage digital and traditional marketing channels, optimize customer outreach and enhance the brand’s presence to inspire travelers and grow the business.

The department is comprised of several teams, which include the below:

  • Direct Mail & CRM: Engages past and prospective guests through targeted email campaigns and personalized direct mail, leveraging data to drive bookings and loyalty.

  • PR & Partnership: Builds brand awareness and credibility through media outreach, strategic partnerships and influencer collaborations to expand Backroads’ reach.

  • Website Management: Oversees the website’s content, functionality and user experience to ensure seamless navigation, accurate information and optimized conversion.

  • Brand, Content, Community: Responsible for the creative design, content and social media presence for the Backroads brand.

About the role:

The Junior Production Designer plays a key role in bringing our brand to life across a wide range of print and digital materials. In this role, you’ll support the marketing team and Creative Director in producing visually compelling content that resonates with our audiences and strengthens our brand presence. You will contribute to a variety of projects, helping to maintain high creative standards, ensuring consistency across channels, and supporting the team in meeting deadlines and production goals. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across multiple aspects of design and marketing production in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, with a basic understanding of print and digital production processes. You thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy managing multiple projects, and are eager to grow your design skills while contributing to high-quality marketing communications.

What you'll be doing:

  • Assist with all creative production needs within the department, including:
    • Create templates, assemble pages, and generate PDFs for upload
    • Prepare images for print: photo editing, CMYK conversion & optimization
    • Proof creative deliverables at various stages of production
    • Create digital versions of all catalogs, with links, for internal and external distribution
    • Various post-production tasks (ex. photographer payouts)
  • Photo research and sourcing
  • Support the Travel Agency team with materials for various clients and trade shows, including brochures, postcards, booths, presentations and custom travel agent fliers
  • Create dynamic PowerPoint presentations for a variety of events such as worldwide company meetings, departmental trainings and brand partnerships
  • Contribute to the maintenance and expansion of our in-house photo and video library
  • Collaborate with various teams within Marketing to execute seasonal image refreshes across the digital experience including the website, social media and paid digital ads
  • Maintain absolute accuracy and attention to detail throughout the creative and production process to deliver brand enhancing, innovative and effective marketing communications
  • Various administrative tasks to support the Creative Team timelines and processes
  • Other duties as assigned

What you'll need to be successful:

  • 2+ years of design or production design experience (internships ok).
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Basic understanding of file formats, color management, typography, and print/digital production requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to spot errors quickly.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset and eagerness to learn from senior team members.
  • Interest in travel, lifestyle, or outdoor brands a plus.

Salary Ranges:

$31.25 - $38.47

At Backroads, we uphold a commitment to transparency and fairness within our hiring process, particularly regarding compensation. The salary range posted for each role applies to both employment offers and employees actively working in the role.

New hires are typically offered a starting salary between the minimum and midpoint of the range to ensure there is continued opportunity for salary progression during your employment at Backroads, reflecting our commitment to rewarding ongoing dedication, high performance, and significant contributions to our team. This approach not only supports our budgeting strategy but also our intention to foster an environment that encourages long-term growth and strong relationships between Backroads and our valued employees.

Our office roles are onsite in our Berkeley headquarters, unless specifically noted as 'available for remote'. We do allow one work-from-home day a week, as well as one work-from-anywhere week per year. This pay range is intended for in-person work in our Berkeley, CA headquarters. Pay ranges for remote-eligible roles will be subject to adjustment based on the geolocation of the employee.
