About The Hermitage Club

Nestled in the Green Mountains of Vermont, The Hermitage Club at Haystack Mountain is a premier private ski resort dedicated to offering safe, top-tier alpine experiences. The Ski Patrol team plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our members and guests on the mountain.

Position Summary

The Ski Patroller is responsible for providing emergency medical care, ensuring on-mountain safety, and promoting guest education regarding resort policies and skiing/snowboarding best practices. This role includes daily trail checks, responding to incidents, conducting lift evacuations when needed, and supporting safe mountain operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Emergency Response

  • Provide first response to on-mountain injuries and administer care in accordance with Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) protocols.
  • Safely transport injured guests using toboggans and other rescue equipment.
  • Participate in lift evacuation procedures and emergency drills.
  • Maintain and restock emergency aid caches and first aid equipment.

Mountain Operations Support

  • Perform daily trail checks, signage setup, hazard marking, and snow condition assessments.
  • Report trail hazards, equipment issues, and weather-related concerns to Ski Patrol leadership and Mountain Operations.
  • Assist with trail closures and enforcement of skier safety codes and resort policies.

Guest Service & Education

  • Offer a friendly, helpful presence to members and guests on the mountain.
  • Provide directions, answer questions, and educate the public about mountain safety, terrain closures, and proper skiing etiquette.
  • Maintain professionalism in all guest interactions, especially during emergency situations.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Attend daily patrol meetings and contribute to team discussions around conditions, incidents, and operational priorities.
  • Coordinate with Lift Operations, Snowmaking, and Grooming to support safe terrain management.
  • Complete incident reports accurately and in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Advanced skiing or snowboarding ability; must be comfortable navigating all types of terrain in variable weather conditions.
  • Current OEC certification (or equivalent such as EMT-B); CPR/AED certification required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Ability to lift and transport injured guests and heavy equipment (up to 75 lbs).
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and in challenging winter conditions.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a ski patrol or mountain safety role.
  • Familiarity with radio communications and mountain operations protocols.
  • Knowledge of snow safety, avalanche awareness, and mountain rescue techniques (depending on terrain).

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically fit and able to work outdoors in extreme winter conditions for extended periods.
  • Capable of carrying rescue equipment, hiking on snow, and lifting/towing injured guests.
  • Must be comfortable working in a physically demanding environment and responding to emergencies in remote mountain locations.
