Job Summary 

Our Ski & Snowboard School Instructors serve as professional representatives of Bear Valley Mountain Resort, often providing the first experience with skiing and/or snowboarding.  This position is part of a team dedicated to creating the best possible environment for our guests choosing to take a lesson.  Instructors provide an integral link between students, guests and other departments by providing quality lesson experiences for first-time through advanced level skiers and snowboarders.   

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach private and group lessons for students aged 3 years and up
  • Display patience, professionalism, and good communication skills
  • Attend teaching/ability clinics when available for personal and professional development
  • Set goals for self-improvement and continuing education through PSIA/AASI
  • Be a positive role model for all students, while representing the Ski & Snowboard School in a professional manner
  • Adhere to all Bear Valley Mountain Resort policies and procedures and model behavior consistent with the company Code of Conduct
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings
  • Perform work in other departments before/after lessons as required (POS, Rentals, Lift Ops, etc.)
  • Assist with on mountain special events when available
  • Other duties as assigned 

Skills and Competencies

  • Must be at least 16 years of age (Work Permit required for full-time students)
  • Level 1 PSIA/AASI certification a plus (not essential)
  • Ability to interact with guests on a professional level
  • Work in extreme winter weather conditions
  • Must be an intermediate to advanced skier or snowboarder (minimum comfortable on blue terrain)
  • Positive, flexible and enthusiastic attitude
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Thrives in a challenging work environment
  • Proven ability to work with a minimum of supervision, think quickly and take initiative to address problems in a creative manner that contributes to the team effort and guest experience
  • Ability and desire to learn and strive for the highest teaching standards
  • Knowledge and practice of The Code, as developed through NSAA

Work Schedules

Weather, snow conditions and the number of guests play a large role in the work scheduling of Bear Valley Mountain Resort employees.

Holiday, part-time and full-time positions are available, with a minimum requirement of 18 days worked over the course of the season.

During busy periods – particularly the holiday periods – you may be expected to work six (6) days a week (dependent upon the terms of your position ie. holiday/part-time/full-time).

You must arrange for transportation to work so that you arrive at your designated workstation at the scheduled time.  Keep in mind that you will often be required to drive on hilly, snowpacked, and icy roads.


Working Conditions

Bear Valley Mountain Resort employees are often required to perform their tasks in high winds, heavy snowfalls, low visibility, rain, and extremely cold or warm temperatures.

This position requires the physical fitness to ski and/or snowboard for five to seven hours a day and be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.

 

Uniforms

A professional appearance at Bear Valley Mountain Resort is required, and most uniform items will be provided for you to do your job. This uniform is for work hours ONLY, no exceptions. 

You will be required to provide some items as part of your job, including skis/snowboard, boots, helmet and eye protection – all in good condition and working order.

 

Housing

Some shared housing options are available to qualified Bear Valley Mountain Resort employees who can pass a background check and sign a lease agreement.  Please indicate whether you are interested in receiving more detailed information on housing.

 

 

The skiing/riding employee represents a model of safety for guests and fellow employees. You are required to be aware of all safety procedures, trail closures, and out-of-bounds policies of the mountain.
