Position Summary:

To assist the Senior Environmental Educator with safely implementing Aullwood Audubon’s summer day camp programs for children ages 5-12. This position will be needed for approximately 10 weeks over the course of the summer which will include one week of intensive training, eight weeks of camp, and one week of camp breakdown. Candidate should be available from June 2 through August 8, 2024. Training occurs the week of June 2. The summer camp program runs for 8 hours per day from June 9 – August 1, 2025; this position is expected to work the following week to help break down camp. This position is expected to be available for the duration of camp with no extended vacations. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 40 hours/week.

Compensation:

$17.00 - $19.00 / hour

Additional Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Assisting with planning and executing each weeklong program session, helping to write lesson plans, setting and cleaning up each day’s activities including but not limited to leading outdoor discovery hikes, conducting pond explorations, live animal programs, and facilitating nature crafts and games.

  • Maintaining a safe and supportive atmosphere for campers.

  • Helping campers resolve conflicts.

  • Elevating safety and personnel concerns for resolution to the Senior Environmental Educator/Camp Lead in a timely manner

  • Assisting with Center Animal Care and occasionally supporting Guest Services.

  • Assisting with a variety of CampDoc administrative and computer tasks

  • Helping with camper lunch breaks/Supervised Play and Before and After Care Supervision

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Assist Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of at least two years of college coursework in environmental, life sciences, or education is preferred, or similar amount of lived experience

  • Some formal or informal teaching experience and/or curriculum development, and environmental education experience is preferred.

  • Able to clearly communicate and give instructions to youth campers and adults.

  • Experience in leading groups of children, initiating group activities, and group management.

  • Experience in de-escalating conflict among children, or willingness to learn and apply those skills.

  • Willing to follow Aullwood/Audubon safety procedures and enforce those safety precautions as necessary.

  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, enthusiasm for teaching.

  • Have a flexible and adaptable personality.

  • Able to accept feedback in order to grow professional skills.

  • Able to work productively in a team environment as well as independently.

  • Able to show respect for others of all ages, races, gender, etc., as well as respect for nature and the outdoors.

  • Able to work in all weather conditions, including being outdoors for extended periods of time in heat and humidity

  • Must be comfortable around bodies of water.

  • Able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Must have transportation to and from work.

  • Able to walk on trails, hills, and uneven terrain. Be able to run, sit, stand, grasp, lift, move, walk, push, reach, climb, and pull for short and extended periods of time.

  • Willing to learn CPR and First Aid.

  • Willing to follow Audubon’s policies, including inputting payroll information by required deadlines.

  • Must be at least 18 years old or above.

  • Proficient using a computer including Outlook Microsoft Suite and willing to be trained to use camp software, CampDoc.
