    Job Description

    Marstel-Day, LLC, a premier environmental and sustainability consulting firm, seeks several qualified, on-call Cultural Resource Field Technicians and Crew Chiefs, to support Phase I/II/III archaeology field studies and other cultural resources studies including laboratory work, record-keeping, researching, and reporting for work in DC, MD, VA, WV, and PA.

    The successful candidate(s) will become members of a pool of prospective Field Technicians or Crew Chiefs, who will be called upon to perform work on an hourly basis as the Company receives task orders or assignments for these types of studies and analyses.

    Job Duties:

    The primary duties of the cultural resource field position will be to provide direct support for the implementation and execution of archaeology studies for federal agencies-- including the Department of Defense (DoD), National Park Service, the Veterans Administration, the US Forest Service among others-- and state/local governments or private entities seeking to comply with federal requirements, and to provide artifact analysis and technical writing support.

    Duties also include data recording, mapping, note taking, artifact processing, and some photography. For projects outside the DC Metro area, the incumbent may be required to be on travel for an extended period (1 to 3 weeks) and stay at accommodations near a job site. Marstel-Day will compensate the incumbent for mileage and per-diem costs based on standard US GSA rates.

    Required Skills:

    Archaeology Tech applicants must have:

    • Experience and knowledge in conducting archaeology field studies. An understanding of federal agency missions or federal agency project experience is a plus. Some experience in report preparation and artifact analysis a plus as is specific experience in the Mid-Atlantic region and/or specialized studies.
    • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to cultural resources, or a related subject. A master’s degree is a plus. A 3.4 grade point average (on a 4-point scale or equivalent) in the highest awarded degree is a plus.
    • A strong background in cultural resources work
    • GPS and GIS experience is a plus
    • Meeting Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications for Archaeology or History is a plus.
    • Demonstrated determination to provide excellent support to meeting client requirements.
    • Intellectual curiosity, paired with excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency in the use of Adobe Illustrator and Microsoft Office suite programs Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Access is a plus.
    • Availability for frequent travel in the U.S. as required.

    To be hired, an applicant must:

    • Be eligible to work in the U.S. (DHS Form I-9 must be completed by the incumbent and submitted to DHS for verification of citizenship and eligibility through E-Verify)
    • Submit to a background check as a condition of any final offer of employment.

    Salary and Benefits:

    The Company will pay an hourly rate of $23 to $30 per hour for the Cultural Resource Field Technician position commensurate with the incumbent’s level of education and experience and responsibilities, unless wage and hours regulations governing the project require payment of a higher rate, in which case that higher rate will be paid for that project.

    For these part-time, temporary positions, the company offers sick leave and per diem pay, but no other fringe benefits.

    Essential Functions Description:

    The incumbent will normally work outdoors during any season of the year mainly within the Mid-Atlantic area under varying climatic conditions. Work activities will require substantial manual labor including digging using hand tools (shovel, trowel), lifting, sorting/sifting through materials, repetitive field tasks, and hiking through difficult terrain. For certain projects, the incumbent may be tasked with preparing written communications including the use of e-mail and other electronic reproduction of words, graphs, and photos. Furthermore, the incumbent may be required to make regular use of and be proficient with computers, telephones, mobile communication devices, GPS devices, copy machines, and printers.
