As the Day Camp Counselor, you will build relationships, instill confidence, and provide opportunities for growth and improvement by assisting with summer day camp, winter and spring break camps, and school year programs. Through your leadership, instruction, and motivation you will ensure members and program participants experience high quality programs that build strong youth and families.

POSITION DETAILS

Job Title: Day Camp Counselor

Location: District-wide • Edwards Field House (Edwards, CO), Eagle Pool & Ice Rink (Eagle, CO), Gypsum Recreation Center (Gypsum, CO)

Schedule: Part-Time; Seasonal; Season: April – October. Option to stay on staff for Winter/Spring Breaks

Work Environment: Works indoors and outdoors at one of the Mountain Recreation facilities (Eagle Pool & Ice Rink, Edwards Field House, and/or Gypsum Recreation Center). Work hours and days may vary. Position may require long periods of standing or sitting. Position requires off-site work on special non-camp days to field trip locations in Eagle County and across Colorado.


Supervision Required: Works under the direct supervision of the Day Camps & Active Older Adults Coordinator and Day Camps & Active Older Adults Supervisor

Supervision Exercised: None


Salary: $17.61-$22.01/hour DOE; staff in this position are eligible for a $1/hour incentive for Spanish/English bilingual and can pass the language competency test.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Statement of Duties: Oversee the safety and well-being of children participating in Summer Day Camp Program. Participate and direct recreational activities for children.


Examples of Duties:

  • Ensures the safety of the children while in our care.
  • Supervises youth in district facilities and programs, helping to provide safe, rewarding experiences.
  • Interacts with youth through developmentally appropriate crafts, games and/or other planned activities.
  • Prepares necessary materials.
  • Instructs specific activities within established guidelines and curriculum.
  • Communicates effectively with the public including providing accurate information related to work assignments.
  • Sets up and breaks down equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of facilities and equipment.
  • Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures.
  • Reports incidents of child abuse and neglect observed by you or reported to you by a child.
  • Performs job related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to answer questions regarding childcare / Day Camp policies and procedures.
  • Provide information to the public on facility operations and recreation programs.
  • Inform supervisor of any known situation that may be hazardous to patrons or staff.
  • Performs light maintenance duties such as picking up toys, craft supplies, sweeping/mopping floors, wiping down counters. Ensure cleanliness and orderliness of camp area.
  • Follow Colorado State school-aged licensing policies.
  • Complete special projects and assist in other areas as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable knowledge of: Age-appropriate crafts, games, and activities; program safety guidelines.


Skills and abilities:

  • Follow through on directions and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
  • Work well and interact with children/youth.
  • Lift, restrain, and run after children/youth.
  • Wear the necessary and appropriate attire to actively participate in all activities.
  • Communicate effectively with others, establish, and maintain positive, respectful, and cooperative relationships with all contacts.

Requirements:

Education and experience

  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older; AND
  • Previous experience working or volunteering with children/youth OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of experience and training

Certifications

  •  Must have current CPR Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
